No.
How long did it take Briles to rebuild Baylor? It takes time. You can bet there were people calling for Briles' head after year one and year two. If they had done that, where would Baylor be today? You don't rebuild from where we were in two years. Briles went 2-6 in conference his first year. Second year he was actually worse, going 1-7. 3rd year he went to 4-4. KU will be a senior heavy team next year, and the third year into Weis' tenure. Give the man a chance.

At this point, take the play calling away from him and let him have a shot at it. We can't fall to the level of suckage that Radio took us to. |

Even if you think hiring him was a mistake firing him after two years is one as well.

I would give him next year and if there's no improvement wack him then if it were my decision. Firing coaches after two seasons just doesn't work and it's a good way to get a bad rep in the coaching community which will detract from your ability to find attractive candidates in the long term. As for the $ that's life in the fast lane. I actually disagree in that doing that is the sort of thing a place like KU probably needs to do in order to get a guy to come there when maybe he might have pause to do so b/c it's such a reclamation project at a place that's hard to win.

Crennel didn't get a fair chance as a HC in KC.
Chiefs should have given him at least 3 years. AMIRIGHT?

No the NFL on an even level is much different than takeing a bottom feeder in one of the toughest conferences in America.

Correct. You can usually tell pretty early in the pros what you have in a HC if he's bad enough. That can happen in college too but is not the norm. KU would not be wise to do it two coaches in a row, that would not do well for their perception.

The situation of a top 15 program all time is not remotely comparable to KU.
Regardless if Dooley got a 3rd year most would not have thought it odd beyond UT fans that had turned on him. Also, my position re: 3 years is a general rule, exceptions exist. KU is in a unique position unfortunately being a historical door mat and having fired the last coach after just two seasons. Most outsiders rightly would say it takes more than two years to get it going at a place like that. Gill wasn't just in last place, he was getting bombed every week fielding some of the worst teams KU's ever had. Wacking two coaches in a row after two seasons will create the perception in the minds of prospective candidates that people around there don't have realistic expectations which could cause an attractive coach to say no when he otherwise perhaps wouldn't have. I think Weis is a turd and y'all will be shopping probably after next season unless he wins 4-5 games and fools enough people to prolong the agony.

Most schools that are basketball blue bloods have this problem. I think Weis has plenty to offer the college game. But I think he should concentrate more on the recruiting and "figurehead" nature of the game and leave the play calling etc. to others. He's moving in that direction. He's going to get a third year for many of the reasons you state but ideally what happens in the next year or so is that a real "lifer" is brought on board while Weis moves on. The team right now isn't quitting which is what most during the Gill era thought was happening. What would have been the result against Oklahoma if it weren't for the fact that BOTH the best offensive player (Pierson) and best defensive player (Heeney) were hurt? I think they win. Is it an excuse? No, but it shows that the quality of play is getting better which for a team that won 1 game last year that's a good sign. No doubt it was a risky hire but give him through next year and make your evaluation. |

Dumb, any bcs job is a good one. There are 10-15 premier ones then a big mess of 50 or so schools. Nobody says "I won't go to Kansas, in waiting for the Oregon State job". There are only about a dozen bcs jobs that even open in any given year so if you want one, beggars can't be choosers.
And the #1 rule in coaching hires: Nearly every job is a reclamation. If it wasn't te prior coach wouldn't have been fired. |

I can't fault SZ for making the Weis hire to make a splash. Will it work out long term? Who knows. But the idea that coaches would be turning down the opportunity to coach at a BCS school that has so much $$ coming in is laughable. Lets be honest. KU hasn't won a conference game in two years yet is on national TV constantly and on prime channels. This is the major advantage to coaching in a league with 10 teams when in reality the TV deals in regards to airtime are the same as every other conference. That's some shrewd negotiation... |

The best part is we suck and yet we will still clear an equal $20M cut that Texas and OU get while keeping the 8M in tier 3 all to ourselves.
