HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)
EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...
This is awesome... Huge, Huge News Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM HBO has given the production order. They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES. It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass. It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series. More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already. Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn. Last edited by keg in kc; 04-25-2011 at 03:58 PM.. |

Question, are you coming at this as someone who's read all the books? It looks like The Hound has an expanded role to play with his new role as Sansa's guard/discipliner, but there wasn't a whole lot of him in GoT proper

So....uh....why don't the Wildlings just build a boat?
Mance was a crow, the Night's Watch has a fleet. Surely a few of them can learn to sail and they have no shortage at all of resources (timber, etc...) to build a boat if need be. I guess the visualization of Westeros just makes me wonder why the hell they don't just sail around the wall.

I think the wall was more to keep the Others away and I don't see them putting together a coordinated naval landing. The wildlings are another story.

Speaking of: how -do- the occasional wildlings that come and raid (like Osha) make it "over," "under," or "around" the wall? I can't remember if that's covered or not.

When I first saw a map of Westeros, I thought the same thing, but I'm betting those waters are extremely rough, if not completely frozen. I doubt the wildlings are skilled enough to build a vessel that could survive in those seas.

I really don't think it would be impassable. As for how the wildlings get over, I think I remember Ygritte and Mance both mentioning that there are ways to scale the wall in the less guarded places. They also talk about the abandoning of The Gift because of constant raiding and its relative isolation. It's evidently not difficult to get a small force over, but a massive army would be an issue.

They can't sail everybody. It's not just a wildling army, it's all the wildlings including women and children and old who are all fleeing the Others. Mance Rayder as King of the wildlings can't just leave them, and it would be quite an undertaking to build that many boats. You certainly wouldn;t do it without trying to go through the gate in the wall first.
