Kansas City Royals @Royals 22m
#Royals also announce that RHP Ervin Santana, LHP Bruce Chen, INF Miguel Tejada and INF Carlos Pena have become free agents. What does this mean for Santana? |

Carlos Pena, we hardly knew ye. Unfortunately our brief encounters were extraordinarily awful.

I am sure we will make a qualifying offer to both Santana and Chen. How or when this takes place I have no idea. I don't really even know the definition of qualifying offer.

If we make a qualifying offer to chen I will burn down the K. We have 5 days to make a qualifying offer. A qualifying offer is 14.1 million.

Can you help the ignorant among us define qualifying offer? Chen gets the same qualifying offer as Santana?

Yeah Chen ain't getting a QO. We'll probably let the market play out and see if he'd sign a reasonable 1-2 year deal.

The qualifying offer was a new concept last offseason, and it works like this: Make a player an offer equal to that of the average of the top 125 player salaries and if he doesn't accept, you get a supplemental first-round pick in next year's amateur draft. Sign a player that received a qualifying offer, you lose a pick, either in the first round if you don't have a protected pick (one of the top 10 selections in the draft) or your next available pick. This year, a qualifying offer is $14.1 million, so any player who accepts a qualifying offer will be under contract for 2014 at that salary. The risk of a player accepting is balanced, however, by the value of that additional draft pick you might gain. (For context: Since the start of free agency, picks 30-35 in the draft have been worth, on average about 4 WAR while under team control in the majors.) |

and because signing someone else's FA who was given a qualifying offer costs you a draft pick, the QO will greatly impact their free market value.
Last offseason, draft picks were valued so highly, that many players who the fans thought were going to be lost, went back and re-signed.

They have a ton of guys with incredible tools and natural raw power. They just have a shit approach. If you can dial down some of their swings just a tiny bit, they'll still hit plenty of HRs in that park but they can start drawing walks and taking quality ABs. I'd be really surprised if he doesn't do some great things with the raw materials he has up there.
