My parents divorced when I was three, and for a long time the holidays were always a competition that just ended up stressing me out. If I went to one place during Thanksgiving, I got a guilt trip from the other, same thing with Christmas.
Now we add my wife's family into the mix. We can't be three places all at least two hours apart from one another in two days, so someone is always left out on Christmas Eve or Christmas proper. I can't be anywhere and just relax for two or three days because my holiday arrangements are more like a Rube Goldberg device than a celebration. I don't really enjoy Christmas that much as a result, which I hate, because it used to be my favorite day. |

My youngest sister had her baby on Saturday. Today I get a text listing the baby's Christmas list. I took a gift to the hospital on Sunday morning to celebrate her arrival. Should I also be required to buy a gift for the baby's Christmas? I mean she will be 5 days old. She's certainly earned a gift.

I don't think an obligatory gift is in order, however, if you feel like spoiling her early, why not? |

well, I've only spent one Christmas with my girl's family. It isn't so bad, except for one part. On Christmas day we go over to her grandfather's house. He seems nice enough, but he spends the entire day sitting around 24 inches from his tv, and he's hard of hearing. Meeting him was one gigantic stereotype of meeting an old person. Turns out he likes me, but its because I'm white, clean cut, and don't have any (visable tattoos). I also found that the woman he married produced demon spawn in a past relationship. We'll call her Shirley. Shirley's daughter looks/acts like mama june, and Shirley's grand daughter looks/acts like honey boo boo. I was so uncomfortable listening to all the arguing, I'm dreading going back over there tomorrow. At least tonight I only have to hear shit about not proposing yet.

Other family members are paying for their house, and car, and other assorted goodies (under the guise that its "for their son"). They are continuing with it all, probably due to fear of not being able to afford the divorce, and also due to worrying about the end of the gravy train.
Everyone, including the son, knows what's going on. The mom has essentially moved into the boyfriend's trailer. That's right... I said trailer. |

I'm very apprehensive about the new boyfriend being at my house. In their short time together, he's already been physically abusive to the girlfriend. I dislike both of the guys in this scenario, but it will be made clear to this new boyfriend that he minds his Ps and Qs, or he will be leaving my house.
