Depressing read in SI: Bursting the Bubble, Why Sports Aren't Coming Back Soon.

Oof. Man don’t know if I can take this.

https://www.si.com/mlb/2020/04/10/sp...ming-back-soon

The NBA, NFL and MLB are dreaming up ways to play amid a pandemic, with talk of isolating players in Arizona or Las Vegas or maybe on the moon. It all sounds great, until you talk to people who actually know science.

I can't see how football teams could even practice with this situation going on. Never been more sad than I am getting now, really bummed. No high school football, poor kids.

Apparently the virus degrades pretty quickly in sunlight - could be good news for outdoor sporting events. I wonder how much the effect goes down when it's cloudy though?

The other problem is that stuff like singing or yelling loudly seems to be a very very good way to fill the air with infected breath droplets. So if you have fans you might have to tell them not to cheer. So weird. Probably better just to not have fans. Or have a few spaced 10' apart from each other maybe.

I don't know if they can still do original programming, but if we can't get football back soon it would be nice to have a socially distant skills competition. Throw the ball through tires, bench press, vertical, etc.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country's top medical expert on the coronavirus pandemic and a member of President Trump's coronavirus task force, said there is a way for sports to return.

He suggested no fans and weekly testing.

Appearing on Snapchat's Peter Hamby show, "Good Luck America," Fauci said, "There's a way of doing that. Nobody comes to the stadium. Put [the players] in big hotels, wherever you want to play, keep them very well surveilled ... and have them tested every single week and make sure they don't wind up infecting each other or their family, and just let them play the season out."

"People say you can't play without spectators. Well, I think you will probably get enough buy in if from people who are dying to see a baseball game, particularly me. I'm living in Washington. We have the world champion Washington Nationals and I want to see them play again," he added.
Pretty encouraging, since Fauci has been wrong about everything else.

Would take more than one. The league would figure out a way to navigate not playing in LA or all of California for one season. As a quick example(obviously tons of logistics, etc. would need to be worked out)Arizona could allow all three CA teams a “home” field at our three biggest college campuses(ASU, U of A, NAU). Players could return home Sunday night. Hell, they could still practice and keep a home schedule, just fly to AZ Friday night.

Anyway, just an example, but if the NFL decides it can have a season, it won’t allow one city/state to stop that. Two or more however....

Talking with the front offices to set up the tailgates in Miami and Tampa Bay is not encouraging. They tell us officially that they have had no direction from the NFL about canceling games or no fans in the stands. Some that I've got to know and are Chief fans tell me off the record the same.

Every team is taking their season ticket holder money. I don't see that as a good sign. They couldn't wait to get my money in the past. Its just them doing what they do. Also, with the new CBA, only 15% of the NFL's revenue comes from ticket sales. Thats just a haircut in this pandemic environment.

Based on what teams have told me in the past when setting up these huge tailgates, I'm not hearing what I should be hearing at this point in the process. Maybe its a covid thing. But, we need to start preparing mentally that we are not going to have 80K fans in the stands this year. That games may be played without fans.
