HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)
EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...
This is awesome... Huge, Huge News Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM HBO has given the production order. They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES. It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass. It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series. More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already. Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn. Last edited by keg in kc; 04-25-2011 at 03:58 PM.. |

HBO says... "The truth is when you see how thrilled he is with the production, we know we’ve succeeded partially by his satisfaction ... We told George we’d go as long as he kept writing."

Talk is talk. If the ratings drop, the show will be deader than Ned.

I just finished Clash and am starting Storm- and I have to say if Clash is the worst of the bunch this is the best Fantasy series I've read. I've read all of Terry Goodkind's books; most of the Tad William's, CS Lewis, Tolkien, Stephen R. Lawhead's, and Robert Jordan's books, and a couple of Anne McCaffrey, RL Salvatore, and Terry Brooks books. And from what I can tell, most of these amazing fantasy series have their share of stinkers along the way (Stephen King's disappointing Song of Susanna from the Dark Tower Series also comes to mind). Clash of Kings is definitely not a stinker IMO. It's not as great as Game of Thrones, but it's amazing how nothing goes as expected and as planned in that book. It seemed like everyone got screwed in that book. I thought that was genius.
However, next season will be a bigger challenge for the show runners to keep the same level of quality the first one had. Also- there were two kinda pivotal conversations in the Clash book that they've oddly already had occur in the first season of the show. I'm sure they'll need to depart from the books quite a bit to get everything included. |

The difficult thing with the later books is going to be so many different threads going on at the same time all over the map, and then with Feast and Dragons (I haven't read Dragons yet, so this is an assumption...) you have two books worth of events happening at basically the same time all over the world. In their comic-con panel they talked about how they might end up dividing each of the later books (starting with Swords, probably) into multiple seasons. I'm not sure how feasible it is, economically, and with the age of some of the actors causing difficulties, but this is a series that really could run for 10 or 12 years on television. |
