HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)

EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...

This is awesome...

Huge, Huge News

Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

Paul didn't exactly continue to save people after the first book.....

Another reason my interest in the Dune books dropped sharply after the first one - the Atreides quickly went from heroic to despotic. Hard to root for a bunch whose body count runs into the billions.

The first Dune book had the perfect mix of religion, politics, and science fiction. Once Paul conquered the universe, the shift towards religion and science fiction put the books out of balance, or at least it felt that way to me. Martin's books have the balance of the first Dune....politics, religion, and in this case magic instead of science fiction. That is what makes the series so interesting, at least for me.

Yeah, Herbert only hit it out of the park once. Martin hits it out every time.

Frankly, I enjoyed the books written by Herbert's son that chronical Leto's life far more than any of the original follow-ups to Dune. Leto was always a grounded, honorable, heroic character.

I wouldn't mind Martin doing stuff about Ned's younger days, either. I doubt he ever will, though. At this rate I just hope he finishes Fire and Ice before he dies of old age.

Oh man, those books with Kevin J. Anderson were bad. Like David Lynch movie bad.

They were interesting in that it was more background history, but just...bad.

They weren't great, but I enjoyed them. Certainly more than all that Golden Path/turned into a giant worm bullshit.

And nothing is as bad as David Lynch.

I have read a couple of Brian Herbert's books (House Atreides was very good), and they seem to be much closer to the original in tone. Never got around to reading them all though. Might have to read some of those next after I finish ADWD.

It has been a long time since I read House Atreides, but I remember thinking it was very good. For prequels, they seemed alright, although I only read Atreides and Harokennen....and I don't really remember what the second one was about.

And I agree with Frazod, nothing is as bad as David Lynch. I remember being so excited for Dune in 1984...and being so disappointed in how it turned out.

House Corrino is the third one, you might as well pick it up. If you liked the first two, you'll like it as well.

The other three Herbert/Anderson "prequels" deal with frequently referenced events in Dune history, such as the Butlerian Jihad and the Battle of Corrin. Not as strong as the others, but still, chances are you'll enjoy them. I actually have all six in hardcover and didn't feel cheated.

More Casting News: Jaqen H’Ghar

And the casting news keeps coming: Winter is Coming gets the scoop on Jaqen H’Ghar, the mysterious Lorathi prisoner that’s among Yoren’s recruits for the Night’s Watch. He was (sort of) glimpsed last season, as a shrouded and hooded figure sitting silently in a cage.

According to WiC, Jaqen will be played by German actor Tom Wlaschiha, who’s made a number of appearances in German film and television, and has since branched out into international productions, including films such as Valkyrie (with the show’s Melisandre, Carice van Houten!) and Munich. He’s had a brush with fantasy in German film Krabat, as well, so this won’t be entirely new to him. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes.

Sorry if repost - don't remember seeing this here:

http://www.accesshollywood.com/news/..._article_51531

And on the other side of the Westeros world, a new member of Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) camp has been cast.

As first reported by Westeros.Org, British actor Nonso Anozie will play Xaro Xhoan Daxos, a wealthy merchant who takes in Daenerys, the members of her khalasar (the Dothraki that stuck with her after the death of husband Khal Drogo), and her knight, Ser Jorah Mormont (Iain Glenn), and becomes an adviser of sorts.

Coincidentally, Nonso actually stars as Artus in “Conan The Barbarian,” alongside Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo). That film opens in theaters on August 19.

The new castings join previously confirmed new faces – Liam Cunningham as Davos, Stephen Dillane as Robert Baratheon’s heir and brother – Stannis, Dutch actress Carice van Houten as the red priestess Melisandre, Gwendoline Christie as Brienne, knight to Renly Baratheon, and “Tudors” actress Natalie Dormer as Margaery Tyrell, Renly’s wife.

Love the pick for Jaqen.

Don't mind the pick for Xaro, but in my mind, the only black folk in ASOIAF are the Summer Islanders. I think some of they Myrish folk are as well, but I didn't really envision any of the Qartheen as black. I mostly thought of them as the Mediterranean look -the olive skin tones and such.

Seems an odd choice. Don't the Dothraki call the Quartheen "milk men" or something like that, because they're pale?

Not that it's a big deal, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to vary the ethnicity of the cast, to make the stuff with Dany seem even more alien compared to the events and people of Westeros. In the end, I think it's really just a matter of whether the acting is good.

Ironically, I looked at his picture and thought "gray worm" even though I know the unsullied are mediterranean and much younger. I guess the idea of slaves being black seems so natural after years of western cinema, whether that's right or wrong.

That's funny, I looked and thought "Strong Belwas" before I saw the name, but maybe Strong Belwas didn't come until book 3, I can't remember.
