If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.
A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.
So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way. I understand what point you're making. ALex is a great guy! His teammates love him! He's smart and runs the offense really efficiently, avoiding mistakes and getting out of the way of the running game and defense. It's just that I've seen that formula before. Multiple times. In KC. And it was even less successful here than it was for Alex Smith in San Francisco. Problem 1 is that formula is not a recipe for significant success in the NFL, not anymore. Problem 2 is that KC's head coach has a strong history of doing the OPPOSITE of that formula. Question for you: Does Alex manicure as well... you know where... as he does his eyebrows?

If Smith isn't the guy, fine. It sucks what we gave up, but move one. However, my fear of the situation is that because of what we gave up, they'll be more inclined to give him more chances than he deserves. |

I think that Alex Smith is going to continue to be alex smith. hes going to make the safe play, hand the ball off, and keep the chiefs in games. Nothing wrong with that as long as the chiefs are winning.

Reid has never ran that type of offense. He brought in a more athletic bigger offensive lineman. Maybe he changes his ways. I don't see it happening as coaches don't change that often or that dramatic. |

If there is substantial evidence that Reid is gonna do his own thing and demand 35+ passes per game, it would be nice to see the links. ... and let's say the DO pass 35+ times... most would say that Alex has been very effective in the short pass game... and that is despite facing defenses that load up the box to keep a close eye on Gore and the run game. So even if Alex has to throw 35 per... as long as the Chiefs are not terrible on defense? (meaning, that KC has to play 14+ point catchup).. then Alex will be fine with that.. as he won't feel pressured to force high risk (well covered) passes. |

2 of the past 20 Super Bowl winners fit your formula. Odds are not good that type of plan works out long-term unless paired with a top 10 QB.

Whats more substantial evidence than....well his entire coaching career? He's never been a ball control, defensive HC. He's an offensive QB centered HC that likes to throw the ball. Alot. They're gonna throw it when they're ahead/behind/even etc and try and score points. I tend to think Smith has the ability to do that, but I also understand that if you look at his history when asked to do that, it might show the opposite. |
