HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)

EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...

This is awesome...

Huge, Huge News

Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

But why change him from a Frey to a Lannister then? Interesting. Will have to do some googling and see what the theory behind this is. Thanks!

It could mean we'll be seeing more of Storm of Swords in season 2 than anybody expects.

Or it could mean nothing and it's a completely new character....

I am hoping it is more of a name change than a new character. A new character would continually effect the story, and constantly alter it from the books. Hopefully they will continue to stay as close to the books as they possibly can.

I would tend to lean more that way, too. I don't see them making many new characters for a series that already has a cast of thousands.

'Game of Thrones': Meet Craster
(Exclusive)Welsh actor Robert Pugh has been cast as the wildling who maintains an uneasy detente with the Night's Watch on the HBO drama.

August
107:09 PM 8/10/2011 by Lesley Goldberg

HBO’s Game of Thrones has founds its Craster in Robert Pugh.

The Welsh actor is joining the swelling cast of the Emmy-nominated HBO drama based on the George R.R. Martin novels as Craster, the tenuous ally to the Night’s Watch.

The master of Craster's Keep, which lies beyond the Wall, maintains an uneasy detente with the Night's Watch. For the HBO series, there's much about Craster to make Jon Snow (Kit Harington) uneasy -- including the fiercely unpleasant nature of his relationship with his 19 wives. But as Jon and Samwell (John Bradley) begin to dig deeper into the mysteries of Craster's Keep, they learn that this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Craster first appears in A Clash of Kings, the second book in the series. Hannah Murray was recently cast as Gilly, one of the women living with Old Craster who wants to escape his oppression.

I saw that last night. Gonna be strange, since the last thing I watched him in was Doctor Who. He'll do well, though.

As this series gains fame and steam, I'll be curious to see if it starts landing "star" cameos from various big name actors who just want to be a part of the project. I watched a Community the other night with Jack Black on it (and it was when the show was still pretty early on in its life), and that's what got me to thinking about it. Also thinking of the way that Samuel L. Jackson was dying to play a Jedi.

So I just started watching the series on HBOGo a couple of days ago. I have no clue why I didn't watch this when it first came out. My problem?

HBOGo is down right now and I only had 50 minutes left in the season finale.

I have a love/hate thing going with this thread. Love that it reminds me that the show exists and work is going on for the new season. Hate that it reminds me that the old season is over and the new one is a ways off.

You hear about this?

The Wire’s Michael K. ‘Omar’ Williams Is Headed to Community

If Abed from Community were a real person, his head might explode at the following news: Michael K. Williams, best known as Omar from The Wire, is joining the cast of the NBC series for at least three episodes this fall. He'll be playing the Greendale gang's new biology professor, a role series creator Dan Harmon told us about in the chat we published Friday. Deals weren't inked, however, so we couldn't tell the full story until now. So how did Harmon come up with the idea of signing Williams, whose performance on The Wire caught the attention of President Obama and who, as of late, has been wowing viewers on HBO's Boardwalk Empire?

As he noted in our chat, "The general idea with this season is to add ... a certain amount of groundedness and reality to the series. Because the detractors of our show complain that there's a distancing that takes place because we have such a silliness and far-fetchedness ... So I asked myself, 'What is the opposite of that?' And it's certainly The Wire. I [recently] watched all five seasons, and I wanted to bring a little bit of that mentality and apply it to the Community recipe." Right now, Williams is only slated for three episodes and because he's attached to Boardwalk, any extra episodes would have to be cleared by HBO. But Harmon is thinking positively: "I would hope to have him in many, many [episodes]," he says. "We're really excited." Meanwhile, if Harmon plays his cards right, Community might end up on an updated version of this Vulture List.

I'm so thrilled more and more people are finding their way to the books through this stellar TV show. I probably never would have started reading them (I'd certainly never heard of them!) before stumbling onto this thread.
