Duncan can weigh in on the scouting take on what went wrong with Soria last year, the SABR analysis suggests it's really out of character and he should bounce back fine this year. (You never know with a 33 yr old with TJ)
Steamer likes him to cut his FIP from 4.36 back to 3.76 - or close to his 3.71 in 2015 we signed him after. Last year his HR rate doubled from 9.2% to 17.5%, easily a career high and shocking in our park. (I looked up his splits and in fact opponents OPS'd about 100 points higher against him at The K which boggles the mind and shouldn't happen in 2017) His velocity was a career best 92.5 so that isn't it. His 0-swing and Z-swing % were normal so it wasn't like he wasn't locating. For the first time his slider became a negative value pitch and it was severely negative - scouts eye could explain that. Net: he should revert back to a good if not great option this year. |

Seriously, wtf is up with Dayton and his mutual options?
Has one ever been picked up in the history of sports contracts?

man, if Cuthbert could somehow play second I really like the lineup.
And I see no way barring severe injury issues that the rotation would be lesser than '16. I think this team will surprise a lot of people with just a little bit of luck with the injury bug. |

Rather than a signing bonus paid up front, he's giving going away bonuses instead. Same idea. |

Personally ... I'm super 'meh' about it. Wood, Hammel and Vargas. Guys I'd love in 2014 when our defense was a bit younger and thought of as 'best in baseball by a wide margin' ... not guys I love in the juiced ball era of 2017.
...and we're down to 1 bullpen Cyborg and without them, I trust Ned about 0% when it comes to properly managing a bullpen. Hope I'm wrong. Glad to see Dayton at least going for it 1 more time with our boys Moose, Hos, Salvy and Cain (and Esky). |

I was against Soria from the start because I have zero interest in bullpen guys who don't throw 95+ anymore ...
...especially at $8M per only Dayton gripe I have of late |

I can't blame GMDM for trying to capture lightning in a bottle. Either it works or we fire sale in July to supplement the rebuild. Either way we are better off than standing pat in the off-season.

Wood has like the 5th worst ops+ vs RH among all LH starters. The other 4 have lost their jobs (bullpen'd or cut)
Not sure id roll him out to start a game in Fenway |

Re: Soria and scouting him
He was done in last year by a combination of bad luck, a step back in command, and his slider/cutter regressing. I think he lost some of that deception that used to make his 92-93 mph fastball seem a lot faster, and it didn't look like he was getting the same movement on it. I've never been a fan of his slider/cutter/whatever that is, but he started emphasizing that over his curveball several years back, and I think it's a negative. He doesn't seem to have great feel for spinning that pitch (and I wonder if a drop in spin rate is perhaps one of the reasons it fell back) and seems to frequently lose it... which basically turns it into an 84-86 mph fastball. He also wasn't throwing the tough strikes on the black like he used to ... had a lot more back up to the middle of the plate. Doesn't hit his strike percentage, but it shows up in how hitters perform. He also had some absolutely atrocious lock here and there, especially early. I could see a bounce back, but it really will come down to how effective he is at hitting his spots, IMO. Also: a slider is going to play up when you as a hitter have to worry about a guy pounding you 92 at the knees on the Black of the outside corner. Without that worry... It doesn't seem like he's been throwing that curveball with confidence since his second TJS.

Meh. I hope Soria bounces back, has to work ahead in more counts this year and he'll probably be fine. Not sure how he got that kind of contract, though.
