HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)

EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...

This is awesome...

Huge, Huge News

Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

That's the second time I've seen George mention the Chronicles of Amber. I actually bought that last week. If it sucks I'm sending him a nasty email.

Speaking of other fantasy novels -

I got The first in the Wheel of Time books, The Eye of the World, on audiobook from the library. It sounds like a cool story, but the audio book is unlistenable to me, because the reader sounds EXACTLY like this guy -

The Eye of the World is a great book. Maybe my favorite of the series (several immediately after are really good as well).

I'm sure you know this, but it's a polar opposite to A Game of Thrones. Lots of magic, very little stakes (as in nobody important ever dies). Plenty of politics, though, so they share that. As well as the nearly endless descriptions of places and things. Although he doesn't dwell on feasts the way that George does. He seemed more into dresses and women crossing their arms under their breasts.

I'm getting near the end of Storm of Swords (yes, I'm a very slow reader), and it's got me rethinking a few things. Martin is really taking a lot of what we thought happened in Game of thrones, and is turning it on its head, and it's just blowing me away!

So, I have a major spoilery question- now that all previous "answers" are subject to question:

Spoiler!

I haven't finished ADWD, but the info in your spoiler is a widely held theory, yes.

Man, I just now started reading ASOS and I hate the fact that I can't discuss anything about the books because everyone here is so much further along. Is it true that ASOS is the best of the first four? How's ADWD?

Most consider ADWD a let down, but I'm really enjoying it so far (200 or so pages in).

When I was half way through ASOS, I thought Game of Thrones was still the best by far, but now that I'm nearing the end of Storm of swords , it's blowing my mind! I don't know if the big final twist of ASOS is bigger for me than Ned's beheading, but it's close. I like the pacing of Game of Thrones better, but Storm of Swords is definitely a more epic book.

I think Martin started making his stories a little more bloated after Game of Thrones. They're still great, but how many stinking lines do we need to describe what the characters are eating, LOL! That's something that seems to plague most fantasy writes- a tight first novel followed by a series of more bloated novels after it. Something tells me that the writers who get their first big check, use the money to put a hit out on their editors- ha! Yeah, that's just a joke, but it does seem like it, right?

I wouldn't mind seeing separate threads for each of the Song of Ice and Fire books. It would be nice for those who are still making their way through books 2-5, but IDK... Folks at CP seem to like to stick to these super threads.

I absolutely loved AGOT and ACOK. Yeah, the story doesn't advance nearly as fast in the 2nd as it did in the 1st, but I don't mind.

Spoiler!

Ah, well if it's widely held then I doubt GRRM will go that direction. He seems to enjoy surprising his readers and never seems to go where you think he will. So scrap that theory! New Theory:

Yeah, for me that was the first time that reading the table of contents of a book proved to be such a big spoiler! But even so, it's still a pretty big emotional kick.

Storm of Swords is far and away the best book. Mind blowing twists and story developments.
