http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300...2017-finalists

Quote:
The 26 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2017 were trimmed to 15 finalists during Tuesday's Gold Jacket Finalists special on NFL Network.

The 15 modern-era finalists join three other finalists to comprise 18 finalists under consideration for the Class of 2017.

Former Seahawks safety Kenny Easley was announced as a senior finalist last August by the Seniors Committee, which reviews the qualifications of those players whose careers ended more than 25 years ago.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue were announced as contributor finalists in August by the Hall of Fame's Contributor Committee that considers persons who made outstanding contributions to professional football other than players and coaches.

2017 Hall of Fame finalists

1. Brian Dawkins, safety (Philadelphia Eagles, 1996-2008; Denver Broncos, 2009-2011)

3. Kurt Warner - most dominant player at the most important position for several years. That's a go.

4. Ladainian Tomlinson - Okay, whatever. He scored a lot. That's fine.

5. John Lynch - Very borderline candidate, but he's the best I can find on this list.

This list is terrible, by the way. Isaac Bruce should go in after Torry Holt, though they're both legit candidates. So I can't vote for Isaac first. And where's Everson Walls and Albert Lewis and Deron Cherry? Roger Craig deserves it more than Terrell Davis, and I'd painfully put Mecklenburg in front of a bunch of these candidates.

solid observations....Andersen is a no brainer.

Come on now ... I find it funny that some of you are acting like Davis couldn't belong in the HOF. With all the names listed he not only has the regular season stats to back it up but the post season. The HOF has always looks at post season success positively.

I wouldn't have put him in the same year LT got voted in, but some of these comments are pretty funny and obviously bias.

We've opened up a can of worms where we can now start letting in RBs who were phenomenal for a very short stretch. It's not that TD wasn't great for a short stretch. But the HOF is really elite company. And I can't understand how a guy like Roger Craig who completely changed the game and did it for a very long time can't get in, but a guy who only did it for 3 years does. I don't think that's right.
If Priest Holmes had more post-season credentials then he would be more of a lock. Holmes basically had 3 dominant years - before injuries hit him. Those three years he had significantly less rushing yards but quite a bit more receiving yards (that was his game). If he had been the reason his team went to the super bowl and won (I remember reading many posts here about how Elway 'owed' his super bowl rings to Davis) then he would have been a shoe-in. As it stands, I wouldn't be outraged by Holmes getting in but I don't think he will without being the leader of his team that won the super bowl plus he was never NFL MVP or Super Bowl MVP.
As for Craig, I think he should be in and he may well eventually get there. His problem is being on a team with so many good players. Was he really that good or were teams paying so much attention to Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Dwight Clark...

The guy had some great stats in, like, 12 postseason games while playing with a HOF QB behind an OL that greased up its members in a scheme that saw the likes of Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell eclipse 1,000 yards. He had three dominant seasons, one good one, and about three more where he didn't do shit.

Shaun Alexander had a handful of very good-great seasons. Priest had three and a half great seasons, etc. What makes Davis different?

Well, obviously I am not the only one who thinks he did enough to get in the Hall. I'm not sure I would have voted him in with this class, but to say he isn't worthy is crazy to me.

First off, he obviously passes the eye test for anyone who watched him play. While an injury cut his career short stats and hardware support his cause. You can't just point to other players and schemes. That is a cop out. Otherwise you could do that for quite a few great players in the Hall of Fame.

It sucks when rival players make it in the Hall, but let's not get silly and act like he wasn't a great player. While perhaps border line, he always deserved to be in the HOF discussion.

I disagree. I think you have to take everything into consideration.

If a guy gets in based on a handful of great seasons and the eye test then I propose Jamaal Charles should be on the ballot in a few years.

Perhaps... I guess we will see. Charles doesn't have close to the hardware Davis acquired though. Also, like it or not, but Post Season matters to voters.

If none of that changes for Charles then I expect he will miss the HOF.

It has nothing to do with him being on a rivals team either.

I have no problem with Elway, Sharpe, Tomlinson, Gates, etc making it.

Some of the comments were obviously bias comments. Not yours persay, but there were some silly ones posted the past few pages. That's where I was going with that. I think, we all can agree that he was a pretty damn good RB. Worthy of the discussion. Apparently, the voters felt he deserved to be in.

Davis has more hardware than Barry Sanders. Barry Sanders>Terrell Davis.

He's definitely very good.

I guess my Hall criteria are a bit more stringent than the guys with the votes.

100% agreed. I was just mentioning the hardware as one of the things that appear to be important to voters.

However, is it really fair to compare anybody to Barry Sanders? I think we are mostly on the same page, but splitting hairs here. I don't think TD is a no brainer sure fire Hall of Famer. I just think he was good enough to get into the conversation and apparently the voters saw enough to vote him in.

Some of the posts about how crazy it was that he made it caused me to defend him. Nothing else really.

I feel you. He was definitely a really good back. I'm not mad about it or anything, just kind of wondering where the line is drawn.

How do you feel about the names that I mentioned in a previous post? Guys like Priest Holmes, Alexander, Chris Johnson, Marshawn Lynch, etc?

This would be a great time to hit the Warner's up for my new helmet idea and the hall of fame would bring that marketing exposure. I could sit next to Brenda and us both get nods of approval from a teary eyed Kurt at the podium.
