Sheldon Richardson going to USC

Sheldon Richardson reneges, commits to USC
Share |

BY VAHE GREGORIAN Posted: Thursday, November 11, 2010 2:41 pm

Prized Mizzou football recruit Sheldon Richardson said Thursday he has changed his commitment from MU to Southern California.

Richardson, from Gateway Tech, has spent the last two falls at College of the Sequoias in California after failing to qualify academically at Mizzou. He sat out all but two games this season with a wrist injury that he says he now has recovered from and did not require surgery.

Although Richardson attended MU's Oct. 23 win over then-BCS No. 1 Oklahoma and said "it felt like home," he committed to USC last weekend.

The main reason, he said, was his belief that USC and well-respected defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin would best prepare him for a transition to the NFL after just one season.

He said the fact USC won't be eligible for a bowl next year because of NCAA sanctions didn't bother him.

Richardson, considered a 5-star recruit out of high school, said he still plans to take other recruiting visits, most likely to Miami, California and Arizona State.

He was vague when asked whether he had told MU of his decision yet.

"Uh, back and forth. I'm going to call them later," he said. "It's kind of hard to tell them I'm not going there no more. Or I think I'm not going no more."

Asked if that meant there still was wiggle room in his decision-making, he said, "A little wiggle room."

I think the most lekely scenario is that they both come back. Smith had the injury, and Gabbert isn't ready. He's a third rounder at this point. His workouts might push him into the econd, but that would still cost him $20 million versus being top ten next year. Factor in the labor issues, and they should both be back.

I agree. I think it is going to be hard to replace Barnes....I think we will miss him next year more than we realize. Other than that, I think every position will improve across the board except possibly DB.

Whats my name? **** you! Thats my name.

The bad news is you aren't playing football for the University of Missouri. The bad news is you have one week to earn your spot back.

I am here on a mission of mercy from Gary Pinkle.

At halftime of the New Mexico Bowl, McShay said if Gabbert comes out he's the #2 QB in the draft behind Luck. Might be hard to pass that up.

No doubt. I think the uncertainty from a potential work stoppage could really benefit us though. Underclassmen will have to declare before the NFL labor situation is settled, and I can see less players declaring this year than in a normal year.

I think Gabbert comps well to Joe Flacco though, and I can definitely see him getting a mid/late 1st round grade from the NFL. We'll see.

I say there's no chance of that. If Gabbert is the #2 QB, he should run like he stole it. Good for him. Mizzou will be fine. He'll be a better pro than he was in college. I don't think he's the difference between a loss and a win next year for the tigers.

What that comment really meant was that since his team is horrible, then it's not a real sport.
