The Long, Slow, Arduous Bataan Death March To Drafting OL On May 8th
I keep looking at the talent right now, have been for about three months.
And I honestly think the talent is at its best at OL towards the end of the 1st round. Andy Reid needs to replace Albert, and there's no guarantee he has faith in Fisher. And Asamoah has almost certainly left, so we'll be in the hunt for a guard as well. This is a team looking to get away from Pioli's smaller, nimble OL, and towards Reid's larger, more powerful OL. Maybe we bring back Schwartz at guard. Maybe not. God. This franchise has conditioned me to prepare for the worst. ***UPDATE*** OL the Chiefs could potentially, inevitably draft at 23, depending on where things are in 5 months: OT Greg Robinson, Auburn OT Taylor Lewan, Michigan OT Cameron Erving, Florida State OT Antonio Richardson, Tennessee OT/G La'el Collins, LSU [not coming out this year] OT/G Zack Martin, Notre Dame OT Cyrus Kouandjio, Alabama OG Gabe Jackson, Mississippi State OG Cyril Richardson, Baylor OG David Yankey, Stanford OG Xavier Su'a-Filo, UCLA I will run mini-scouting reports on these guys over the next five months in this sad, miserable thread, plus any guys who also drift onto the radar. If there are any others you'd add, feel free to. Last edited by Direckshun; 03-24-2014 at 01:07 PM.. |

My mock draft has started. From that thread:
Chiefs select LG Xavier Su'A Filo (traded up to 16 to get him). "Article" I posted as it happened. Building for the future Chiefs revisit storied past with present pick Kansas City - With its first pick in the NFL draft, the Chiefs once again dipped into a well that has produced unmatched success for the Kansas City franchise. No stranger to highly powered offenses built around a dominant offensive line, the Chiefs selected star UCLA LG Xavier Su'A Filo with their first pick in the NFL draft. General Manager John Dorsey could barely contain his glee at landing the talented offensive lineman: "Look, we know that you win with the guys up front. This is a formula that has been successful in KC. Pick the best player available. That's almost always going to be an offensive lineman. And when it isn't, it likely will be a defensive lineman. Skill players are great, but they're NOTHING compared to an OL. "I mean, look at the history of this franchise. It has had a lot of success over the past 25 years, and that has always started up front. You don't win the most games in a decade with a formula that doesn't work." With the selection of Su'a Filo, in addition to the selection of Eric Fisher with the first overall pick in last year's draft, the Chiefs are going back to a strategy that has kept the Arrowhead Stadium parking lot full of happy tailgaters year after year: Build a strong OL. Be respectable every year. See what happens in the playoffs. "With Xavi and Eric, we have the makings of the best OL in NFL history," Dorsey said. "And that's how you win. Skill position players are nothing unless you have the right resources dedicated to building your OL. And everyone knows you can't build an elite OL without filling it with first-round picks."

I think another part of his problem is that Allen, Asamoah, and Hudson were drafted for the ZBS. They were drafted for their quickness. Reid instituted a man heavy scheme. When the line switched back to a ZBS midway though the season, than the line improved. |

I think he got caught in-between a scheme change and tried to do the quickest thing possible in an attempt to be effective in Reid's offensive plan, which was to gain weight to be more productive in a power type scheme. Allen has the tools and the attitude. Let's see if a year in the system and a full off-season of knowing what he needs to do allows him to be more effective as a player. I think that the offensive line is going to surprise people this coming season. |

I think that was likely the case. He got fat and lost his quickness. by the way, I tried to do a google image search of jeff, and this was one of the first that came up.
http://www.pond-photography.com/2013...-jeff-marissa/ kinda cool to have engagement photos on the 50 at arrowhead. |

I haven't talked to one scout/exec that would take David Yankey in the first 3 rounds. |

Incredibly sarcastic. I'm using this entire mock draft to mock the Chiefs. It's flying over the head of most of the guys on there. Trying to prep my round 3 pick (Pick must be either an OL or DL/OLB) ... Brandon Turner (OG, Clemson)? Joel Bitonio (OT, Nevada)? Trent Murphy (OLB, Stanford)? I think I'm going to go with Turner.

I know that Jeff Linkenbach came so cheaply that they could possibly have brought him aboard as competition for Johnson at the backup, while the high pick G takes the starter spot, but I just can't buy that Dorsey is as thick-headed as Andy Reid is when it comes to the offensive line. Dorsey has tried to fix the Packers' tackle situation with first rounders in Bulaga and Sherrod in consecutive years. He's rotated in veterans that were long ago acquired by the team (TJ Lang, Jason Spitz, Josh Sitton) with young players acquired through the middle rounds of the draft (Evan Dietrich-Smith, Marshall Newhouse). Two of those depth players (Lang, Dietrich-Smith) were promoted to starter after Dorsey left and played phenomenally. Dorsey has final say. I have a hard time thinking he'll go guard. I don't think he will. |
