After they put a team in Texas that starts to interest him, he'll stop bashing the sport and start talking trash about it, a la Texas Rangers

It was a very good World Cup overall but that final game wasn't exciting.

I hope we develop our very own Messi/Maradonna/Pele/Best. If not, I think the development is on a good arc. The USMNT will have to develop the midfield skill possessed by the Germans to take the next step.
Baby Lee has touched on this somewhere in these WC threads and on the Sports Reporters it was touched upon again. Imagine if the US has a player develop that can work the ball in that manner. But those skills a learned not in an academy, but (as BL has mentioned many times of the month) in an alley. With a boy, a ball and a wall. Imagine of we had our very own bad boy like N. Ireland's greatest on ball player, George Best. Best was a drinker, carouser, a fun boy. Yet he was one of the most dynamic on ball players in history. world class dribbler. What would be even greater is if that player were polarizing like Johnny Manziel. Fans would tune in to watch his great play and hear about his antics. A player you either love or hate. It worries me that we send our best players into academies which may actually reerun their growth. Futbol skills are honed like a poor kids basketball skills. On the pavement court, at night and sometimes all alone. |

Also, that goal by Gotze was incredible in the level of skill it takes to chest down and one time it into goal on the dead run. In the WCF. In extra time.
And that cross from Schuerrle? Unreal. |

Looking back on it, it's difficult to tell whether Messi's under-performance was Germany's D or fatigue. But looking at some of his unforced errors, including the last penalty, I'm leaning to the latter.
Would that Messi had Robben's stamina, but that's like saying would that the Bugatti Veryon had the BADD GT40's horsepower. The announcers said that Messi's father told them before the game that Messi felt like his legs were 100Kg apiece. Messi is an art form for the spectacular potential in the average. He's a short dude, slight of frame, but has developed a skill set that drives everyone else nuts. Actually his small frame works in his favor as he's a compact ball of dribbling that never lets the ball out of his feet, with finishing finesse and power. A fairly good cross section of his skills on the pitch. Note how close to his feet the ball always is, how quickly he can cut and change direction [particularly how often he cuts the ball between the defenders strides], and how compactly his shots are launched. He has the 'joystick' factor of Dante Hall, the speed and vision of Jamaal Charles, and the home run accuracy of Joe Montana. THAT's why he's considered among the greats.

He was so exciting he went scoreless the last 3 games of the tournament. Imagine if Joe Montana flopped in 3 straight playoff games. It'd never happen of course.
