You should look again, Rothlesburger's line was holding a pocket, it was around him but no one was penetrating and when he threw the ball, no one was in his face or contending the throw.

no... of course not. Truth is, Ben looked like shit most of the night, but he did look sharp on that last drive.
Difference between Alex and QBs who are better than him:

Alex throws a pick, he curls up in his shell and plays super conservative football to make sure he doesn't throw another one.

A better QB throws a pick, he makes every effort to make up for his mistake by throwing touchdown passes.

Well.....those people have a far different definition of "playing well" than I do. Smith didnt play poorly. He played safe, (critical) mistake free football. But with that mistake free football, comes very low production.....which is one of the biggest problems I have with Smith.

It is not enough for a quarterback to play mistake free. I want my quarterback to make plays and produce. With Smith's lack of interceptions comes a lack of production. That happens more often than not, and was display against the Panthers.
Being judged on preseason though... why put yourself at risk on deep throws when your OL is getting ass-raped and a successful deep pass means nothing towards the team's record?

Now if he crawls back to the 1st half season play, and he doesn't need to? (meaning OL is decent, but he still is too careful), then sure... harsh criticism would be warranted. But preseason? Man, throw the quick shit and stay alive for games that matter.

The question was asked "do you think Alex played poorly against the Panthers?"

Weird that we would reply by talking about a preseason game, huh?

Probably the ones you disagree with are:

- Palmer
- M. Ryan
- Cutler
- Dalton
- Stafford
- Rothlisberger

eh... you sound like someone that is still stuck in the distant past.

What you are describing is rather vague and difficult to argue one way or the other. Someone has some tangible proof of this, hey, great.. let's see it though.

I'm saying that the judgement has to include that it's preseason and not games that matter. In games that matter, I can better appreciate people saying that he needs to be more aggressive. In preseason, no... survive in PS and then be more aggressive when games matter in September and on.

I'm surprised that this was unclear, but maybe you get what I'm saying now.

You know why Alex has a high winning percentage in recent years? Teams that take care of the ball still win a high percentage of regular season games in this league. It gets trickier in the playoffs, but those predicting double digit losses seem clueless to this.

Truth!

It's FREAKING PRESEASON.

We already know - and even the ARDENT Alex supporters have said this - that Alex isn't going to take unnecessary risks unless they are necessary.

Preseason is the definition of unnecessary.

Yep.

I've been saying it for a few weeks - I think this team has A LOT of holes.

But I just don't see an Andy Reid/Alex Smith team winning only 4 or 5 games.

I have a response, but I'll sit on it cause it's nothing you haven't heard and like JD, I'm not interested in going round and round. We disagree and that's cool. I was just interested in seeing who watched the first half of that game the other night and came away from it thinking, "wow, Smith sucks."
