GIG HARBOR, Wash. (AP) - Two pit bull terriers broke into a house through a pet door Tuesday and attacked a woman in her bed, mauling her badly, a Pierce County sheriff's spokesman said.

The woman was able to grab a gun and try to shoot the dogs, then break away from the attack and lock herself in her car, where she called 911, sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The woman, who was not immediately identified, was taken to a hospital in Tacoma, where she was listed in serious condition.

Officers planned to talk to the dogs' owner.

The pit bulls also killed a neighbor's Jack Russell terrier, which entered the house during the attack, Troyer said.

"The thought is that the Jack Russell heard noise in the neighbor's house, came in and was attacked by the dogs," Troyer said.

Firefighters responded first, locking the dogs in the house, treating the woman and calling for an ambulance.

Officers "had to pepper spray and fight the dogs until they were detained. We almost had to shoot them on site," Troyer said.

The dogs were taken to a Humane Society and will probably be destroyed, he said.

It was not immediately known why the dogs entered the house, whether the woman had dogs of her own or what set off the attack.

Well, I just don't know what your laughing at other than at yourself because of your lack of awareness. Teeth are different in breeds of species of all types of animals. It largly depends on what their for. Mostly the types of food they eat. Sharks and piranna have sharper teeth because their predatory than say other type fish with a diet of shellfish, corals or tough plant matter. A sheep dog doesn't need sharp teeth for herding but a pit bull does for fighting/attacking. So I believe you are very wrong about that and should laugh at yourself for a little ignorance there.

Just as you previously posted like such things as "lesser athletic" dogs or get a cat or poodle or something like that, who needs a dog you can't play with. If you can't play with the dog I consider it useless.

First of all I am not ignorant. I have probably forgot more about dogs than you know.

Whatever, all dogs teeth are sharp dude. Last I checked they are all still carnivores and use their teeth to eat.

I already told you I play with my dog I just don't play super aggressive games. The fact that you find it hard to believe that kids play with pit bulls is what is ignorant. When they were trying to pass BSL out here we brought pits to the park on weekends with a sign that said pet a real pit bull. Pretty funny stuff. You want to see a lot of people's opinion change in the blink of an eye. This worked GREAT.

I don't get it OK. For the record the reason pits are used in fights has nothing to do with how ferocious and mean they are. It has everything to do with how athletic and game they are. But what do I know, I don't get it.

How far would you go to protect yourself and neighbors from the dogs?


Point being...its darn easy to be hypothetical but if your kids had to deal with a neighbor pit bull, just how would you react and where would this take you?

You don't seem very intraspective/listen-to-what-your-saying. That "game" in pit bulls IS how ferocious and mean they are. That's why they are executed because they don't have "game". MAN, dude, you think everybody is stupid except yourself when its so obvious you live in denial about this subject.

Sure there are a lot of good pit bulls because they have good owners. It the bad owners that make the already most fearsome dog into a dangerous one. And I think there are far too many BAD owners which makes this type of dog a big concern.

I already said they were athletic. There are many breeds that are prey driven/animal aggressive.

People aggresssive is different. Part of the problem is is the term "pit bull type dogs". Fighting dogs have people handling them when they are fighting. Human aggression meets with bullet so that gene is not cultured. Because of this APBT's are inherently not human aggressive and not recommended for security because of it. There is tons of information out there on this subject. When the dog haters wanted to start banning breeds this is one of the problems they had so they had to start using the term pit bull type dogs to get the numbers up so they could go after them. The real deal though is these people want to ban as many breeds as they can and they are just using the APBT to get to the rest. If you do your research on BSL you will totally find this to be true.

I absolutely would not tolerate the dog running around loose. But neither would I a Doberman or Shephard or Rottweiler. I believe you can scare most dogs off. Stand your ground and be very loud and animated. This doesn't work on pit bulls. You only present just a bigger challenge for them which they gladly take on.

And what about if you had a smaller dog, which I gather in Big Daddy's world is a sign of weakness. Awnry and belligerent pit bulls just freak out at the sight of other dogs. If the pit ever got a hold of it ... its over.

Ive had to deal with them when the owners dump them in the country. No farmer would have one so its not a neighbor issue here. Its city folks who dumped them rather than register or whatever it was they had to do in KC

No I'm actually done with this. My exchange with you reminds me of an old work out thread. I spent nearly 20 years of my life running health clubs training people or working with trainers on various techniques. I try to help some people and I get told things like I don't know what I'm talking about and my favorite quote "to build bulk you do light weight/high repetitions"

Such is this thread with you. I have spent most of my life with this breed and have my big male in the truck outside of my work right now. I have placed a boat load of them in loving families most with kids. NONE has ever bitten anyone to date. A lifetime worth of experience with the breed yet I have you who obviously has zero experience lecturing me not only on the breed but also attempting to show me my ignorance and tell me I'm afraid of my dog. Whatever dude.

Tell you what, why don't you go to a BB made up of MIT grads and attempt to teach them mathematics.

You want to hate the breed go ahead. Here's some more for you to hate. Be careful though you know these dogs have sharper teeth than other dogs.

Big Daddy, keep sticking up for what you believe in. You've hung around and have taken some abuse and you're still around. I admire that. You really have a genuine love for this type of dog and I am sure yours are well behaved and friendly. I only wish there were A LOT more like you.
