MEDIA REACTIONS: Chiefs Early Draft Losers on NFLN

Quote:
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs had pressing needs after a rough free agency, and they still have massive questions on the offensive line and at wide receiver. Dee Ford is a nice long-term gamble, but should start his career as a part-time player. Third-round cornerback Phillip Gaines seems more like a developmental prospect. Fourth-round RB/WR/return/cornerback/football player De'Anthony Thomas is a wild card. This was a draft in which the Chiefs needed some instant-impact players, and it's hard to see them here.

Relying on 6 picks in the draft to fill an entire offseason's worth of needs was a poorly calculated decision by Dorsey and was exacerbated by the fact the Chiefs failed to address the weakest position on their team (WR).

Where else during the remainder of the offseason will the Chiefs have an opportunity to significantly upgrade their WR position?
Your problem is that you went into this draft thinking that this team cares about winning in 2014.

Honest question, what exactly did they do or not do to make you think that?

The bigger question is why they didn't address the safety position which could actually be the sole reason we lose the games we do in 2014.

Reid was all over the WR position.

Reid took over in 1999. In 2000, the Eagles drafted Pinkston with the #5 pick of the 2nd round, and then went back at WR in the 4th round. In 2001, he followed that up with drafting a WR in round 1 (Freddie Mitchell). He went WR in round 3 two years later and round 2 in 2005.

He also went out and got T.O. in 2004 and brought in Donte Stallworth off a 70 catch season in 2006.

This. Let's come back in 3 years and see how many players are still in the NFL and at what level they are contributing.

That's most likely the case. No team goes into a season trying to lose. That would be like purposefully trying to get fired in this league.

Every football discussion, on every fan football forum, is pointless in the end. Might as well close them all down.

But isn't it possible that we actually got better... between last years guys coming into their second year where the biggest jump usually occurs and these rookies who the new regime feels fit their system better than the old, outgoing guys?

You may not agree about Smith, I'm not sure, but I feel he qualifies as a "franchise QB" considering how he played down the stretch... Reid may have been right about the guy all along, he might be the perfect guy to run this system.

As you always say "give me a franchise QB, a top 10 defense and I'll take my chances"... and I agree... with a few tweaks, most notably the replacement of Lewis and some quality depth, we could certainly approach top 10 D.

It just seems to me that just because our collective fan plan didn't play out, doesn't mean that the guys who get paid to do this didn't have a plan all along. They really must feel that most of their second year guys are ready to jump, I just sincerely don't buy this idea that prideful professionals like these two aren't planning to win every year.

I'm disappointed we didn't find a receiver or safety the same as most, but that doesn't mean I don't think these two men aren't seeing something the rest of us don't and that they have written off 2014... that tack just doesn't make sense to me viewing it from their perspective.

If the Chiefs are happy with the progression that the passing game made and have essentially replaced the one piece they lost to free agency, then the expectation would be that They're good at WR and the addition of Kelce improves the offense that much more.

From that perspective, most of the moves seem more reasonable. I thought they would have gone a little higher with OL considering what they lost...but they may have gotten a steal with Zach Fulton. I read somewhere that he might have gone as early as the 2nd but for a knee injury.

I believe they might think they have some answers already in place, but there's no way in hell everyone they are relying on is going to play to the level they hope for.

It's a gamble, and they sure as hell have to know it.

Agreed, there are gambles all over the place... FS, OL, WR, TE... but I appreciate the fact that they're sticking to their guns, they've been at their jobs a long time and aren't going to fold to popular opinion, I can respect that.

All they gotta do now is be RIGHT, and I'd bet my next paycheck they surely believe they are... I'd trust these two over Haley/Pioli 8 days a week, I really don't see this being a big BS job the way I belatedly found out those two were.

I honestly felt like I was watching a plan unfold during this draft, not just a random "he's a team captain with average measurables, lets grab him" right 53 bunch of baloney.

Our first three have huge upside and can contribute right away, the next three have great measurables and that's how you're supposed to draft the later rounds... this was a very smart draft IMO.

I don't disagree with the approach, but don't sell me the bullshit that this approach is win now.

It's about replacing the foundation before it crumbles and setting yourself up to win in a couple of years.

I'm only trying to sell you what you already believe in... franchise QB with a top defense.

I have some grave questions myself about how well some of their plans pan out, but if they're even half right about their second year crew, if guys like Kush, Parker, Kelce, Jenkins, Cooper and the rookies etc. work out.

If a few of the new FA's can contribute like Walker, Dressler (lol I know) and whoever we surely pick up after camp cuts... and we know Dorsey has a knack for these scrap pile gems... there is as much that can go right, as can go wrong, I'm betting on these two guys resumes far more than I want to bet on piolis BS EOTD award..

Anyway, I get the mistrust, we've been jacked around so bad even Dr. Phil wouldn't know how to help us through the abuse... but I like this leadership duo and believe they have an honest to God plan.

I am not accusing you of selling me that line.

I am generalizing the bullshit that others are trying to sell me.

I am simply saying that while I have no problem with the direction this management has chosen, I simply don't believe there's anyway that it can be argued that this approach has 2014 has it's primary focus.
