The Pioli Watch Thread

I'm hijacking the thread starter to use for an "updates" area. Sorry cardken. Here are a few recent updates:

Pioli would find a warm welcome in Kansas City. At the last Chiefs' home game, shortly after the embattled Carl Peterson resigned after 20 years as president, general manager and CEO, several signs were spotted in the crowd proclaiming, "We want Pioli." Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Is there any possibility that Pioli may be a done deal verbally and/or contractually, but that he needs some time to set things up back in NE in terms of a successor and any other personnel that may be climbing up the ladder or brought in?

And that the Pats may want to do all of this before both parties go public?

I have a feeling the last thing the Patriots need to do is conflict management if Pioli leaves.

Those people up there have contingency plans in place for every situation.

Am I too late for the meltdown? I figured after the newest update in the original post, we'd be jumping off of cliffs. What's the deal?

I don't think that's unrealistic.

Think about it, if you're in their shoes. (Clark, Pioli, etc.) What's the rush?

Sure... it could be that's it's not going to happen, but I think you'd have heard about it by now. You know... just to rule it out, and change the focus to other targets.

Personally, I like the way Clark has handled this. Very businesslike. He's not the type to be running his mouth about a deal that may not get done.

What if they're waiting till after the playoff games this weekend to hold a press conference? I've heard nothing concrete that rules him out. It seems it's us, or he stays with the Pats.

And even if it doesn't work out... he's the sexy pick. (Admittedly, my choice) But it's not like he's football Jesus. If we fail to land him... it doesn't automatically mean that we'll get a horrible GM. (and HC)

Lerner said he felt more urgency to hire a coach.

''The GM operates in a spring cycle — talent evaluation, free agency, the draft board, getting rid of players, negotiating. The GM has a certain time of year, while the coach operates on the calendar year,'' Lerner said.

Lerner didn't seem to feel that a new general manager would have offered much to the process.....
Did anyone else think that Cleveland fans are worse off than we were under Carl. Winning a SB starts with the owner through the front off ... head coach ... coaching staff ... support staff. This guy doesn't seem to have a clue. Sure he has been doing it for 6 years but I don't recall them being in the SB. Delighted Clark seems to be into winning ways.

Pioli is still considered the front-runner

AFC West news and notes
January 9, 2009 7:59 PM
Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

The Scott Pioli talk in Kansas City apparently will be on hold until after the weekend. The Kansas City Star is reporting that the Chiefs will not make an announcement regarding their opening for a general manager during the weekend.

Pioli is still considered the front-runner. If the search goes late into next week, it may be a sign that Pioli and the Chiefs are not going to come to an accord. The New England executive is considered the top general manager candidate available and his hiring would give the Chiefs instant credibility.

ESPN Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Jeremy Green

Steiny (NYC): The Chiefs have offered Scott Pioli the job of general manager. Do you think he will accept, and if so would this be a good fit for the Chiefs?

Jeremy Green: They are still negotiating but I think he would be a great fit. I have heard one of the biggest holdups right now is the owner wants him to keep Herm for at least this season and Pioli is ready to put his stamp on the organization now which is what they should let him do.

I know for a fact Herm is not holding this up. Nick called him on the phone the other day and I listened to the audio. Here's what Herm had to say:

Okay gang, as many of you know I still have friends at the highest level in the Chiefs organization and have this info to share with full confidence: Scott Pioli is the new GM. His announcement will come Thursday or Friday at the latest. Clark and Scott are working out the finer points of his contract tonight, but the deal is sealed. Also, Clark informed me and my coaching staff that we will be released. All assistants can reapply through Scott.

I only share this information because I'm soon to be no longer with the team and it's fun to share that a new day is dawning at Arrowhead. Scott Pioli will quickly move to clean out the front office and hire a new coach.

The only info I have on the new coach is it will not be Kirk Ferentz from the Iowa Hawkeyes. Kirk coaches his son at Iowa and does not want to leave until his son graduates.

Mike Shanahan has contacted Pioli, but I don't know any info beyond that.
