It would explain a lot if Alex was given direction to try and get Baldwin the ball. Some of the throws he made were not his game style...it seemed forced.

I'm not sure that either team made out on this trade..both players have been pretty much useless 1st rounders.

For right now, at least, Wylie is apparently ahead of Hemingway in the pecking order.

Jenkins NFL Pre-draft analysis:

Quote:
Jenkins was a two-year starter at Illinois (while also starting four games over his first two years) for the now-departed Ron Zook and has the speed to take the top off of defenses in the NFL. He separates well when running with defenders and is good in securing the catch. He has shown a good amount of production and has fifth-round value at the next level if he can continue to get open the way he did in the Big Ten.

Analysis

Quote:
Strengths
Jenkins is quick off the ball and gets to top speed quickly. If he gets a free release, he can be tough for corners to stay with initially. He has ability to separate when necessary and is very fluid throughout his routes. His body is strikingly under control throughout, and he has good balance if corners try to push into his hips in-phase. Jenkins is willing to go across the middle and always reaches out to pluck the ball. He is effective both long and deep but is less of a threat after the catch as he is running his routes.
Weaknesses
At the line, Jenkins initiates a hard step in, then back out, as his go-to move to release off the line, and corners can see it coming at times and get their hands in his chest to throw him off. He is a smooth runner, but he will take plays off and doesn't seem to run every route as hard as the next.
Baldwin's Pre-Draft NFL Analysis:

Quote:
Overview

Baldwin is giant wide receiver that has the potential to develop into a starter at the next level. He is a speed builder that can get behind defensive backs and he quickly finds the ball in the air. He is a weapon over the middle, as he has strong reliable hands and the body control to make acrobatic catches in traffic. He is dangerous after the catch as he can run away from linebackers and over defensive backs. Baldwin has to refine his route running skills, but he could sneak into the first round due to his freakish measurables.

Analysis

Strengths
Baldwin is a huge receiver with deceptive speed. Long strider that can stretch the field and shows the ability to consistently track the ball in the air. Possesses excellent hands and high points the ball very well. Strong runner after the catch that breaks arm tackles and flashes a vicious stiff arm. Fearless over the middle.
Weaknesses
Sloppy route runner that struggles to separate from quicker defensive backs. Takes too many false steps in transition and does not always find soft spots in zone coverage. Does not have enough wiggle to make defenders miss in the open field. Not exactly a willing run blocker and will occasionally take plays off.
Jenkins vs. Baldwin (NFL Combine measurements):

Baldwin:
Jenkins:
Height: 6'4"
6'0"
Weight: 228
190
Arm: 33 5/8"
32 3/4"
Hand: 10 1/8"
9 1/2"
40: 4.50
4.39
Bench: 20
12
Vertical: 42
38.5
Broad: 129"
124"

Summary of trade:

Jenkins doesn't provide much in the way of blocking in the open field against NFL defenders which is needed when Kaepernick freelances with his legs. Baldwin can't run routes, which is needed above all other things in the Edwards West Coast system. Both have underperformed after being first round draft choices and both teams are hoping that a change of system will allow the players to reach their first round potential.

A good trade for both teams.

I'm a little choked up over here....

It's truly not worth the argument with this guy. The great thing about CP is that there is absolutely no escaping your record. I've misfired, sure (Baldwin being among them), but Laz is truly miserable. So in the end, when it turns into a completely unsubstantiated pissing match, I'll just stand on my record.

The NFL is better when talented players play well. Baldwin's a talented player. I hope he figures it out in SF because it seems apparent that he just has not grown up like he needs to.

He's spent his career talking the talk, but I wonder if he really walks the walk. All the tweets and videos of midnight running in the world doesn't mean much at this level. I watched Hard Knocks on Saturday and they had a camera on AJ Green watching the Atlanta from his apartment with another injured teammate. His teammate turns and asks him something like "Hey, do you have TiVo?" And Green honestly had no idea. It was kinda funny; he just said something about how he doesn't watch much TV.

Now there's a talent gap between Baldwin and Green, for sure. But it's not as big as the production gap between the two has been. Had Baldwin gone out there and busted his ass like Green does, he'd be a player. He has every skill in the world and talent to spare. He just hasn't grown up.

Maybe this is the moment for him we're hoping for from Bray. Maybe getting his ass dumped will convince him that he's been coasting and show him how to truly excel. I hope he does.

Things to know on AJ...

1) He is fast, but it never really shows on the field.
2) Small. a bit frail. His size/weight would lead you to believe that he's more stout than he is. Was getting OWNED at the line this past weekend. Couldn't create separation to save his life.
3) Came into camp last year totally out of shape. Was puking at the first minicamp.
4) Motivation really appears to be an issue. Won't fight for the ball
5) On the positive side, has HUGE hands and was good for spectaular catches in camp...but they were few and far between.

Attaching a draft vid with AJ as the first pick.

EDIT: NM...it won't let me post the link. Its an HD vid of the ESPN and NFL Network footage of AJ being drafted. Lookup Marvin49 on youtube to find it.
Regarding the bold - did they have him out wide? Or was he lined up in the slot?

I only ask because I was hoping Baldwin could use the 'Victor Cruz' model of gaining separation via scheme. Cruz, when he was played out wide last year, really really struggled to break the press. That's why losing Manningham and Nicks hurt him so badly. When he had Nicks and Manningham, Cruz could play the slot and the NCB couldn't really get a press on him. Baldwin was just too slow out of his cuts to make that work.

Jenkins, OTOH, is not. If he was playing out wide, I can see how he'd have been eaten up by the press. Some guys just never learn to use their hands well (Cruz). Perhaps moving him to the slot will allow him to utilize that speed and first step better.

Jenkins has only had one HC. Baldwin had three and couldn't fit in with any of them. Maybe that's a good sign for us?

I still like Baldwin's talent and I still think some day the light may go on and he could amount to something. All that said, he's not going to amount to anything here. I remain convinced that Thomas Jones absolutely altered the course of Baldwin's career by being a dipshit thug.
The punch from Jones caused Baldfail to become a slow, shitty route running idiot?
