I think that wasn't yet confirmed, though with his injury I think it was unlikely.

I think the most he recovered was that the feeling had returned to his toes or he could feel his toes...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

The thing that was bad was, there was the initial shock of DT being critically injured. His friend was completely thrown clear out from the Suburban, and it rolled over him and killed him at the scene. Derrick was going at an extremely high rate of speed, like way over 70 mph in a snow and ice storm.

After they got him to Florida, they thought he was stable, but knew he was paralyzed. At that point there was conjecture as to whether he would ever walk again. For sure, football was over for him. He would have been like Roy Campanella in baseball (if you know who he was).

The blood clot didn't happen until three weeks after the accident and killed him almost instantly. That was the hard thing to deal with. We thought once he was in the hosptial, he was out of danger of dying. As we now know, that was not the case.

Was it on a huge 8.5x11 player card, because I got Neil Smith's, Harvey Willams', and DT's autograph. My mom got Nick Lowery's, she had the hots for him before he started beating up children and what not.

No it was actually his pro set rookie card. Your Mom is not the first woman to fall for Nick Lowery. His well groomed mustache and Peters clothier suits set the standard for men's fashion in KC back in the day.

Watching the replay now on NFL Network.

Loved the play at Alabama where he just blasted through the fullback to take out the running back. It was absurdly good.

According to my nurse wife, her and I can't understand how a patient being taken care of in a hospital can die from a DVT. DVT's (Deep Vein Thrombosis) start in the legs and should be found before it is ever dislodged and can move to either the lungs to cause in this case a PE (Pulmonary Embolism) or to the brain causing a stroke. He had no feeling so he couldn't feel the pain caused by a DVT but it is a nurses and other healthcare professionals job, especially in a the case of a spinal cord injury where the patient is immobilized, to check for the presenting signs of a DVT such as warmness and reddened area in the calf. Seems to me that this should have been found before it ever progressed to a PE. On top of that he should have showed signs of decreased oxygenation and trouble breathing once the blood clot was in the lungs before it got to the point of death. This should have been caught even 13 years ago.

Dang, I miss that sack and strip.

I remember watching him his rookie year, and he was so fast off the ball. It was jaw-dropping. I remember watching him and thinking, "Oh, my. This guy is for real."

She said sadly his death was likely caused by human error. Not to put it lightly but it happens. More often than you think.
