To Amazon Prime or NOT to Amazon Prime

Sorry if Q, but I'm on the fence about doing the whole Amazon Prime thing. Seems like getting rid of Netflix all but pays for it, but wanted to ask the opinions of others in this Mecca of awesome knowledge called Chiefs Planet..

Is Amazon Prime really worth it over eBay when you buy, let's say, 5-7 items a month? I ask because I always do the "price+shipping" deal, so it seem like it's a wash at some level. That being said, "Prime" would ALWAYS mean two-day shipping, and that's something I hardly ever do on eBay, so it could be a deal that makes it worth it enough to buy 15-20 things a month. The whole "eliminating some of the instant gratification culture/concern" deal...

Oh, and I've heard that if you use an "edu" account it's free for six months (perhaps not a big deal over a lifetime!!), but is then like half the cost. Does anybody know if that's true? If so, and it' the son who has the "edu" account, how does "Dad" pull off that scam without having the kid able to buy pretty-much anything he's ever wanted?

Thanks in advance... Just looking for some opinions before I leap...

Gotta love it, wake up to two fried OOOOOOLD monitors, and two new ones will be here as fast as UPS can do their thing.

Granted, I could go to Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, or any number of other stores, but the bail money I'm saving by not is worth the wait until Tuesday and living through a day, maybe two, of a single other (even older 16"!!!) monitor on that computer!

Amazon introduces Prime Now, a one- hour delivery service

Quote:
Amazon.com, the world’s largest online retailer, has introduced a new, one- hour delivery service, according to an article published by the Wall Street Journal on December 18, 2014.

This new service is called Amazon Prime Now and it promises delivery in about one hour for items ordered between the hours of 6 a.m. and midnight. The service began today for one zip code in Manhattan and may spread to more locations if it proves successful.

Amazon is charging $7.99 for its new Prime Now service, which is available to anyone who pays the $99 annual fee to use Amazon Prime. Customers in the Prime Now delivery zone who opt for two hour delivery pay nothing extra- the $99 fee is sufficient. About 25,000 items are eligible for Prime Now delivery and more could be added in the future.

Amazon Now can be accessed via mobile phone using a downloadable application. Once an item is ordered, Amazon dispatches a bike messenger to send the goods within the promised time frame. At present, many of the goods are in storage inside a building in midtown Manhattan. Amazon leases the space, once the site of a retail store, for merchandise storage and offices.

One hour delivery service isn’t entirely new, but its success rate has been inconsistent for other companies. Ebay had a one- hour delivery option in the works, but it proved difficult to implement. Google presently offers a one- hour delivery service of its own, but the products and delivery locations are limited.

If Amazon Prime Now catches on, it could revolutionize the way consumers buy merchandise. Amazon says it will expand its Prime Now service to more zip codes as long as the service operates smoothly.

Sad story... Thought I was doing well getting the carpet version of an office chair mat on Amazon for $30 instead of at Office Depot/Max for $43; just saw a similar one at CostCo for $18....

Ugh!

FWIW, I can order many items from Amazon and receive same-day service for the standard $3.99 One Day service fee. It really comes in handy.

That's pretty awesome. Integration with grocery list apps would also be nice. For instance, my wife and I use Grocery IQ to sync our store lists. If we also had an option to "order from prime now" with items, that would be even cooler.

Neat idea. I also use the subscription option for stuff like toothbrush heads.

It took me a month, but I just got a KILLER TV deal because Amazon kept screwing up the order.

First TV I ordered was a 55" dumb TV with connected Roku for $529. A week later, they said there was a backorder and they didn't know when they'd get it. They'd price match another TV shipped/sold from Amazon up to $100 more. I found a 55" Vizio I liked and got them to up their offer to $140 over the original TV, and I went up to $549. A week later, they canceled the second order because even though it said in stock, they didn't actually have it and didn't know when they'd get more. So we went round and round on the phone and eventually they offered the 60" Vizio after confirming it was actually in stock. This one was $900, and I told them I wasn't interested in that if they were only going to give me the same $140 off, so after a minute, she offered an extra $100 off.

Moral of the story is when they don't meet expectations, call them on it. CS is very aggressive about fixing issues.
