HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)
EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...
This is awesome... Huge, Huge News Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM HBO has given the production order. They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES. It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass. It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series. More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already. Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn. Last edited by keg in kc; 04-25-2011 at 03:58 PM.. |

After watching that trailer, it really does look like Jojen and Meera are being cut from the story. It's not such a big thing, but it makes me wonder how the story will now work with Hodor, Osha, Bran and Rickon?

So Jeyne Westerling's part of season two. I don't remember knowing that. She didn't show up until the third book.

I think they kind of needed to move her into season two in order to continue the Rob storyline in an intersting way. The book doesn't emphasize Rob much in book 2 because of the POV method GRRM uses and Rob is off battling without a POV character there to give any first hand accounts. But in a TV show, you can't drop off character lines as easily, it becomes more noticable. I'm guessing they will combine books 4 and 5 as well since they can't really drop the main storylines for a season like GRRM basically did with the books.

Man, I can't wait for the reaction to that from people who haven't read the books. Hell, and even for those of us who did. Ned's death was so well done, even when we knew it was coming. |

I would assume season 3. I would imagine the way they're going to have it is to show Jeyne and Robb's meeting onscreen (the books didn't show it as I recall - he was wounded in battle and she tended to him) during season 2, have Jeyne and Catelyn meet late in the season, and then have events unfold as in Storm of Swords during season 3.

I think RW has to happen in Season 3. GRRM has already said that the episode he's writing for the next to last episode of the season is a certain battle that we SOIAF fans know and love, so I don't see how they'd get from that event to the RW in one episode.
However, I do think RW will be in the middle of Season 3, just like in the book. |

There is too much material to combine that all into one season. I could maybe see them combining Storm, Feast and Dance into two seasons.

There's too much material in each individual book to combine a pair of books into a single 10-episode season. Think about it. The books get longer. And season one was pretty heavily condensed as it was. If anything, I think they might combine the events of books over multiple seasons, like Feast and Dance together over two ( or three) seasons, everything happening chronologically. And if anything, it's probably more likely that individual books would be divided into seasons. Like Storm of Swords. That book is incredibly long. How in the world do you compress that into just one season, much less try to combine three books (all of them very long) into two seasons. I wouldn't be surprised if there ended up being more than 7 seasons, because there's so much ground to cover.
Besides, what are the odds that Martin actually finishes the last two books in less than 5 years? Or that he doesn't end up having to write a third? If season two is in 2012, and they do a season annually we're talking about season 5 in 2015, meaning he'd have to finish the sixth book in time to broadcast season 6 in 2016 and then the seventh in time to do season 6 in 2017. And that's broadcast. They'll have to go into production in the year prior. Meaning 2015 for season 6 and 2016 for season 7. That's three and four years from now, respectively. Does anybody really think Martin's going to have the entire series finished in four year? |
