BY BILL McCLELLAN • bmcclellan@post-dispatch.com > 314-340-8143 | Posted: Wednesday, April 6, 2011 12:00 am | (17) Comments Font Size: Default font size Larger font size Share 37 Missouri athletics director Mike Alden has been getting a lot of grief about the man he hired as the school's new basketball coach, Frank Haith. Until Alden lured him to Mizzou, Haith was the basketball coach at the University of Miami, where in the last two seasons he put together a conference record of 10-22. Overall, his conference record was 43-69. I mention conference records because overall records can have more to do with scheduling than coaching prowess. Why would Alden hire a guy who in seven seasons never had a winning conference record? Let me answer that with a question of my own to the guys in the audience. Are you going to tell me you have never gotten drunk, flown to Las Vegas and married some girl you met earlier that night? Thank you for your honesty. Then you know how that goes. You wake up in the morning with a buzz saw going full bore in your head and you notice your arm hurts. You check out your arm and see a new tattoo. You say to yourself, "Candy? Who the hell is Candy?" Then you recognize that the sound in your head is not in your head. It's somebody snoring. You turn and there she is — Candy. What I'm trying to get at is guys don't always do smart things. I am guessing that Alden was at the Final Four in Houston. He was feeling sorry for himself. And why not? First, Mike Anderson left him for the University of Arkansas. Then somebody told him that Matt Painter, the very successful coach at Purdue, would be interested in the Mizzou job. So Alden asked him. Painter rejected him. That happened to me once. Back in high school, I heard through the grapevine that a girl liked me and would go to the homecoming dance if I asked her. I couldn't believe it. This girl who supposedly liked me was out of my league. I had to work up my courage to even call her. Before I called, I rehearsed some small talk. "This is Bill McClellan. How you doing? Life treating you all right? Things are great with me." You know, some smooth patter. I called. Before I could get past "How you doing?' she interrupted me. "Who?" she asked. "Bill McClellan. I was in your English class last semester." Dead silence. "Life treating you all right? Things are great with me," I said. It turned out to be an innocent mistake. She liked a different Bill, a kid who was on the football team. The grapevine had gotten us confused. Still, I was humiliated. And it wasn't as if the whole world knew. Just my friends. And their friends. And her friends. And their friends. But at least it wasn't in the paper. With Alden and Painter, it was. All over television, too. The whole sports-obsessed country knew about it. So there Alden was in Texas, surrounded by all these other college basketball people, all of whom knew he'd been dumped by Anderson and rejected by Painter. I imagine him sitting at the hotel bar, trying to keep his self-esteem together, pulling out his cellphone. "Tubby Smith? This is Mike Alden. How you doing? Life treating you all right? Things are great with me ..." "Shaka Smart? This is Mike Alden. How you doing? Life treating you all right? Things are great with me ..." "Steve Alford? This is Mike Alden..." And so on. One humiliation after another. What's more, he had a fan base at Mizzou with unrealistic expectations. Why couldn't he get the Butler coach? Why couldn't he do this? Why couldn't he do that? Those crazy Mizzou people acted like John Wooden might rise from the dead and get in line for the job. Didn't they get it? Nobody wanted the job. Then a stranger sat down next to Alden. A nice man. Everybody says that about Haith. He's a very nice man. I can imagine Alden, aided by the booze, morosely telling the stranger that nobody liked him. "That's not true. I like you." "Yeah, but you're not a basketball coach." "Oh, but I am." The rest, as they say, is history. This might not be the normal way to hire a basketball coach, but sometimes these whirlwind romances work out. That's why songwriters write about enchanted evenings. Let's hope that Mike and Frank live happily ever after. |

Unfortunately, Alden never even worked up the courage to call Shaka Smart.

Awesome news on Pinkel.
Our program looks to be in great shape for the foreseeable future. Pinkel is set to become #1 on Mizzou's all-time wins list by 2013. |

Class act.
Dave_Matter-2 mins: Just spoke to Pinkel about new contract & decision to boost staff pay: "I make a lot of money, so I feel good the decision. ..." ... "I didn’t really want a salary increase. But my staff’s always been a priority. |
