Who made Poison a Rock\Metal icon?

Ok, so I am flipping channels the other night and hit "metal mania" on Vh1 right? All the sudden I see this video of Posion doing some song and of course, they look nothing like the bundle of stickss they did in the 80's where they wore more makup than most women. It was a performance they were doing at a party and man they sounded like shit. So then last night during my channel flipping, I see Brett Michaels doing a TV ad for Time\Life Music for rock hits of the 80's or whatever. Once again I am ready to sling the remote at the TV for someone even aknowledging these peter-puffers, let alone making them out to be something they were the exact opposite of.

So Brett Michaels puts on a cowboy hat that is rolled up on the sides, takes on the Vince Neil biker look and all the sudden Poison is an icon of the 80's? These are the same bundle of stickss that named themselves "Riki Rachet, Bobbi Dahl, C.C. DeVille"???? The same guys who drew a double take on their album cover because you could not believe a guy would intentionally put on that much makeup and hairspray and not call himself a crossdresser?!

What a shame to see what was a good era of music being represented by the same ass-bundle of stickss that brought it down.

Someone please, stop this madness!!!!

I saw Guadalcanal Diary in a club in Portland. It was a great show, except for the drunk that kept shouting "Ghost On the Road" the whole time, even during both opening bands. The Grapes Of Wrath was one of those bands and also gave a great show.

I went to a lot of concerts in the '80s but I have two that I think were the main cause of the hearing loss that I have today because they were so incredibly loud.

The first was Motorhead. It was for their Bomber tour. To be honest, I wasn't that familiar with Motorhead at the time and went with a friend mostly to see the opening band, Krokus. It was just a wall of sound. Very painful. The bomber light rigs were cool as hell, though.

The second was a Frontline Assembly show in a club in Portland. The bass was just intense, just an overwhelming physical presence. It took better than a week for my hearing to come back "fully". It was a fun show, though.

Didn't a Ted Nugent concert at Arrowhead hold a world record for sound level at one time?
Seems like I have a factoid like that reposed somewhere in the ol' brainpan.

I saw Ted Nugent around 1983 or '84 in Savannah. I remember not being too impressed, he didn't have Deric St. Holmes but was doing his own singing. What I do remember is the opening act was Alcatrazz. The singer was Graham Bonnet wearing a shiny suit and the guitarist was off to the side with his own spotlight wearing a velvet outfit. It was Yngwie Malmsteen. He seemed like a prima donna and you could tell that Bonnet was getting perturbed that more people were watching the guitarist rather than him.

Guadalcanal Diary was the winner of the 1984 MTV Basement tapes with the video "Watusi Rodeo", very cool song. They won a recording contract with Elektra Records and I believe put out 3 or maybe 4 albums with them. I saw them a couple of times, I remember the last time around 1988 they did a Bon Jovi song and when they sang "I'm a cowboy, I ride a steel guitar" everybody laughed. Now I guess the laugh is on them.

Love Tractor was another Atlanta band similiar to REM, they had several albums. Once I saw them in a club and they were playing a song and asked if anybody could play bass, and someone in the audience got up on stage and took over the bass. Then they did guitar, keyboard and finally drums. So when it was done, the band was sitting in the audience and strangers were playing the song on stage, it was really neat.

Four. All were excellent, though the last, Flip-Flop, was the weakest. I saw them on the Flip-Flop tour, which would have been about the same time frame ('88). Don't remember any Bon Jovi songs, though.

I was a big REM fan, too, though my "fan-dom" cooled off considerably after Green. Haven't bought anything by them since.
