You need a new daily driver, your budget is $24,000...

You can buy a new or used vehicle. What would you buy and why?

That's been a fairly common complaint with this generation of Accord

At that price point, you're gonna sacrifice something. Road noise seems like a common issue with less expensive vehicles.

Good to know. I had my eye on a 2013 Accord Sport as my next work vehicle.

I will have to take one for a drive myself to see how unbearable it really is since it is a sharp looking ride.

I guess its all about perspective. This is the most expensive and seemingly most refined car I've bought.

I'm a proponent of buying quality used cars. They all depreciate so never buy new.

For that amount of money you can drive a very nice BMW.

It also could have been just the one we drove, but honestly the Toyota and Subaru did not have the issue at all. We did like the Honda, but having had other vehicles in the past that made that made noise we just decided to knock it off our list. Now on a sport car I don't think a little outside noise is going to bother me much as I would expect it.

I mean.. I have only eaten, breathed, and slept used cars, for 10-12 hours per day 330 days out of the year, for 13 years.

What would I know~?

I could also tell you what a circlejerk Consumer Reports is, but its not worth the time.

What do people in the car business use for reliability measures? Could you provide some?

I'm honestly asking because I do realize some of the downfalls of Consumer Reports.

They have hard numbers on what, when, and why people bring in vehicles for repairs, via ticketing systems like Reynolds and Reynolds, ADP. Combined with things like customer surveys, internal testing and R&D etc etc. Manufacturers are so detail oriented on what caused a problem, how to recreate it, what fixed it etc etc. so that they can figure it out and try and fix it. They dont always succeed, (and you could argue if they really care or not, or if its a money thing) but the info is out there, and as a whole, the industry has access to all of the info.

I have 2009 BMW that I bought new. So far the only maintenance has been oil changes, tires and a battery. The Accord we owned in the mid 2000's was in the shop all the time until we gave up on it. A much different experience that we had with our 92 Accord which was rock solid.

So what do consumers look at when deciding on the reliability of car models?
