Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs

Well, it looks like the deal is done.

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

And if Bradford does win a SB, I'll admit I was wrong about him.

I'd trade 10 first overall picks for a Super Bowl win.

2) I think this buys them time (in their mind) to find a developmental QB somewhere in the middle of this draft or the next one. Since they'll likely finish with a middling record, they wont' be in position for an elite prospect.

It's an abysmal strategy with an absolutely awful success rate.

They are hoping for a 1/50 chance and immediate dividends rather than a 1/3 chance and growing pains.
They really oughta just take Geno since they've already pissed away two picks.

Best of both worlds.

For the universal opinion among talent evaluators in the NFL to be this consistent, it's something just about everyone on CP isn't seeing.

I don't think this is showing they are adverse to a young QB because they've both shown in their previous stops they will invest high picks in them.

I think it's them surveying what's available at this moment and saying we aren't tying the Chiefs to that for 4-5 years.

I don't think trading for Alex Smith stops them at all from investing a 1 in a QB in 2014.

I think they have also examined the talent on this team and the window is now before guys like DJ, Hali, Flowers, Charles, Bowe are long in the tooth.
Here's the crux of the issue:

The draft picks spent on Smith could be used to rebuild a core that will be aging.

I've mentioned this before, but they could have punted on the QB this year, taken another player at #1 overall, and traded back in round 2 to acquire more picks for next year.

After doing so, they would have ammunition to move up if they finished in the middle of the pack in 2013. Now, they lack demand for their first pick, they have no second pick, and they won't have a second or third pick in 2014.

So which is it?

To me, it seems like they took the worst of both possible decisions. They committed to a QB without leaving themselves a realistic opportunity for a safety net, because if Smith is what he is, and that's a mediocre game manager, they'll win enough games to put themselves out of place for an elite QB, and since no one will trade up to #1 overall this year and we have no #2, we're not going to get the ammo we need to move up from the middle of the draft to the top end if a QB prospect or two separates themselves.

If Alex Smith is half as good as Reid and Dorsey must think he'll be, then KC won't be in a position to draft a viable, franchise-type prospect.

Drafting Geno would only amplify the stupidity of the Smith trade, because they could have gotten 80-90% of his contribution whilst saving two valuable draft picks.

They're committing to Alex Smith and deep sea fishing for a QBOTF. It's not gonna work.

This has made me very sad.

Right now it's only a 2nd and a 3rd. And if both bust then I'd have rather wasted the 2nd and the 3rd and not the 1st.

I've followed along with your Geno Smith threads and I was on board with Geno Smith but it wasn't a sure fire thing. And still I would have took my chances with Geno Smith but that's not the way it's going. Realisticly we are the KC Chiefs and both decisions are the wrong one. So quit acting like GD Baby. We'll see. Right now we are a 2-14 team. We have a long way to go to compete for a SB, much less be a dynasty. You don't jump from 2-14 to dynasty in one offseason. I'll wait to see what happens instead of deciding it is a failure before the first snap on the season has even taken place.

No that's not good enough. We have to win a SB and have another ten year window to win several more or it don't count.

Fortunately, all of the consistently successful teams of the last decade were able to build their foundations by trading for another team's backup.

Minnesota with Sage Rosenfels, Houston with Schaub, the Chiefs with Cassel. Dynasties all of them, built by the backup QB trade.

How are we not wasting our first?

They have made comments about drafting Joeckel even if they re-sign Albert.

Same brand of comment Pioli used when he decided to let Carr walk and sign Routt.

Maybe.

Maybe they're so desperate to fix the QB problem they're gonna start Smith and have Geno come along slowly.

They're burning a lot of draft resources to do that, but I wouldn't give a shit to be honest.

Washington burned far more draft resources on QB last year and made the playoffs with two rookies.
