Why draft a kid at 3rd overall that you feel you have a good chance of cutting in 2 years?

A good enough chance of cutting that you insist on language in the contract that protects you incase you want to cut him?

They should be forced to sell.

Although the NFL "looks the other way" when it comes to teams holding the #1 overall pick, agents are not allowed to speak with teams about contracts before players are drafted.

Fwiw, of 75 players drafted No. 1 to No. 5 from 1999 to 2013, offset language would have applied to 1 player: Cedric Benson.

I had forgotten about him. But even he played 3 seasons before being cut. He then signed a one year contract with Cinci for league minimum, so I don't believe that the offset language would have applied to him either since there was no signing bonus from Cinci to offset. So, I really see no point at all in the offset language being a reason for this ridiculous standoff.

Regardless, since the new CBA, there hasn't been anyone cut that was drafted in the entire first round that I know of and the 2013 draft was full of busts. Certainly nobody in the top 5 was cut. He was the 3rd overall pick. He wasn't getting cut anyway so the offset language should be a non issue.

Many teams use some kind of offset clause on 1st round picks. Should they wear a sign too?

I agree with everyone who called him selfish. Walking away from almost $19 million on the table at age 20-21 years old is absurd.

Meanwhile, the other 31 teams are breathing a sigh of relief that they did not select him in the first round.

I disagree with basically this entire post. He isnt "walking away from $19M."

As far as the 31 other teams comments go, all 31 other teams would have locked him up by now, and not been petty about not giving their top draft pick what he should be getting.

The way it's being framed in the media, which obviously supports the NFL, is that Bosa is simply demanding his full bonus up front when he's essentially asking for the same thing every other player at his draft slot has received since 2012 and what 95% of draft picks in the top 3 rounds have received in the same span.

50% up front with offset language is a bad rookie deal for Bosa, and that's what had been offered. The new offer was basically the same thing with 60% up front.

The chargers, as usual, have been active in smearing Bosa and setting the narrative that he's just a greedy asshole. The truth is they're just squeezing pennies because their shit organization is broke.

I read a story somewhere recently that stated the Chargers were one of the hardest teams in the NFL to negotiate with and it also referred to their use of the offset language as the reason.
