Eric Berry

We know what it's going to cost to keep him. Question is he worth the money? Has this defense missed him?

I think there's a noticeable difference without Berry against the run. The pass defense looks similar though.

For a team in cap trouble I don't think Berry is a must re-sign guy.

Trust me, big fan of both DJ and Berry. I've often talked about Berry's really difficult role in a Ryan scheme. It's just head scratching why the defense seems to have played much better when losing two pro bowl guys. Maybe and hopefully the supporting cast has become that good. Or maybe it's Sutton... this team blitzes Berry a ton more than they do Abdullah. I have no clue. In either event, will be very interesting to see what the Chiefs do when Berry comes back.

I know the team's going to re-up Berry. But I am wondering exactly how much we miss him.

Right, figured you were big on DJ like everyone else, I was just making a general observation based on old mores... "****ing DJ cant get off a block to make the tackle!"

LOL

He then goes on to be one of the best MLB's in the game.

Tough part is, Abdullah is playing well enough at strong safety. Not Berry-like, but considering Abdullah is practically free, it begs the question... let's say Berry is worth $8M. If you kept Abdullah at Strong Safety and brought in an $8M free safety, is that better than Abdullah at FS and Berry at SS?

It seems like the only thing that could make this work is to give Berry a shot at FS and see if he's an $8M free safety. The problem is in a contract year, can't imagine Berry would be too happy about that.

And, much like DJ took a ton of heat for his play early on... lets not give up on Ford too soon either.

Yes that one play made me wanna pull my own teeth out with rusty vice grips, but it was exactly the same with DJ... an incredible flash here, an incredible bumble**** there.

The kid still has plenty of time to prove himself.

Berry's a boy scout. He'd probably do it if we asked him.

I believe he'll be playing CB before this season is over, the way our injuries have piled up.

An 8 million safety better be more than a minor drop off when he's not in there..use that money for a top 10 press CB.

Well...I'm just wondering if Berry is important in Sutton's scheme...like linchpin/centerpiece important. If he could neutralize Gates and Thomas, I might be on board...I'm looking at the value in regards to KC. Much like Flowers wasn't valuable enough to this scheme.

I'm not seeing the "on field" impact that's worth what he will ask for...he was from the Pioli/Crenell days. Different defensive philosophy. This is year two..Sutton's doing pretty good at realizing what he needs. Next season will be interesting...

He's supposed to be. Which is again what makes this all confusing that we don't notice he's missing.

A Ryan scheme asks a lot from a strong safety. They do traditional in the box responsibilities like a tj ward. But they also have to have the speed to blitz which is why Cleveland paid a premium for Whitner. They also have to have significant football Smarts... Unlike most strong safeties, Ryan safeties play closer to the line and often act as an additional linebacker. Main reason for that is so they can make adjustments. Namely, it's berry who usually decides what he is going to do, and he has to communicate that to his teammates. So if he blitzes, he needs his teammates to adjust around him. I often wonder if maybe this is the part we are missing. Does berry have the football iq we think he does?

Hard to say...having Poe, DJ, Hali and Houston will mask a lot of deficiencies. On the flip..with that supporting cast..he should be making more impact plays.

His rookie year..he looked liked a superstar..since then...He kind of vanished.

Perhaps we are putting to much stock in our stars. Maybe the kids ought to just be free to play like when they are out. Perhaps our coaches aren't as smart as they envision themselves and hinder rather than enhance our player's performance.

Just some thoughts.

Did he? We partially lost that Ravens playoff game in 2011 because Todd Heap beat him like a rented mule.

Berry's coverage has improved leaps and bounds since then.

I'll just throw this out there:

Berry's rookie contract makes him somewhat easier than normal to cut this offseason. We'd save ~5m in cap space, and "only" have ~3m in dead money.
