If you don't re-sign him, the Cavs don't have a legit wing defender. Shumpert isn't just a decent defender.He's very good.
If you sign him, Gilbert takes a hit out of his pocket, but it doesn't affect the Cavs much

So yeah, this signing is fine with me. Of all the players the Cavs have signed, Tristan was the most expendable, not Shumpert.

Shumpert at $10 million is insane. The guy completely disappeared during the Finals.

And Thompson can give you adequate defense at two levels of the court. Shumpert is perimeter only. There is no way that Thompson is less valuable to that team than Shumpert.

I could care less how Dan Gilbert spends his money, as long as he finances a winner. Who would the Cavs get to replace Thompson and Shumpert? They are over the cap, so they could only sign guys for the MLE and nobody is as good as either of them at that price. Some of these prices are insane, but better to lock guys in now than next year, when $ will really go up.

Shumpert disappeared because: 1) he was injured two ways; 2) he's not supposed to be an it guy but he's fine as a role player on offense; 3) the Cavs asked him to put an insane amount of energy on defense. Again, with his Bird rights, I'm a lot less concerned since Gilbert doesn't care about the luxury tax. If your owner is going to spend, why not overpay for a guy you need.

Of the 2, I clearly think Thompson is the better player. But he's getting paid more. And for the Cavs, he's much more expendable. The Cavs have to find a way to get minutes for Thompson, Varejao, Love, and Mozgov. And quite possibly another piece from the Spurs like Diaw or Splitter. Not to mention Sasha Kaun. I don't want to give these guys up for free, but a sign and trade of one of these guys would be nice.

You take away Shumpert and the Cavs' wing defense is really, really weak. You take away Tristan and the Cavs may still end up with a logjam at PF/C.
