Chiefs announce Bray as the backup QB
http://arrowheadaddict.com/2016/05/2...p-quarterback/
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid made a surprising declaration on Tuesday afternoon. The Chiefs are still a little more than two months away from the start of training camp in St. Joe’s, but we already have some very interesting news on the depth chart front. Reid has proclaimed that Tyler Bray, not Aaron Murray or Kevin Hogan, is entering training camp as the primary backup quarterback to Alex Smith. Murray was a fifth-round pick back in 2014 while Hogan was a fifth-round selection in April. Despite being an undrafted free agent in 2013, Bray has stuck on the roster but never appeared or been active for a game in the regular season. He was placed on injured reserve last year after sustaining a torn ACL in a pickup basketball game. Bray has all the physical tools you could want. He’s 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds and at 24 years old, might finally be seizing the moment after sitting behind Chase Daniel and Murray. It will be fascinating to see if Bray can hold off Murray and Hogan in camp, not having thrown a competitive pass in two years. |

Alex Smith is very similar...but without the deep ball threat. They get him testing defenses deep more and more, he's gonna have a monster year. |

Unfortunately, he hasn't had the weapons that McNabb did during his career, nor did he have the same coach and same system for years on end. |

He wants a QB that will run the plays as called. We have some room to be more aggressive but Reid doesn't want 'stretch' offense. Alex Smith will be more aggressive if we get a legit 2nd receiver. Just like he got more aggressive when we signed Jeremy Maclin.

Reid has always looked to stretch the field when he has the QB that has the arm for it. And it's well documented that he has worked on getting Smith to be more aggressive downfield since acquiring him.

He was pretty good. Career 2:1 TD:INT ratio and in his early years he was a legit threat on the ground.

McNabb had a completion percentage of more than 60% only five times in his 13 year career. He started all 16 games only four times in his entire 13 year career. He never threw for more than 4,000 yards in a single season and only once threw for more than 30 TD's in a single season (31, 2004, Super Bowl year). Most of the time, he threw TD passes in the teens and low 20's. |

The games missed and the lack of a 4000 yard season for McNabb would seem to me things that might be connected. As I recall he averaged 220 yards per game over his entire career, and had a handful of years above 250. That's certainly production we haven't seen here in the last decade. And there's no question that he would throw the deep ball. He was quite different than Smith in that regard, as I'm sure Reid would attest to (since he's periodically talked publicly about encouraging Smith to do it over the last 3 years...).
