Off Season Lets Talk Guns
Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.
Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon? Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware? Part 2: http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=293623 Last edited by Bearcat; 07-28-2015 at 06:06 PM.. |

The 5.7x28 is a relatively new round, compared to the 9mm and .45acp. One of the features of the 5.7x28 is the ability to defeat ballistic armor, even at longer distances, using what is called SS190 rounds (steel core.) The .45acp and the 9mm weren't designed with that purpose in mind, although if you're close enough with a hot load and a FMJ round, you can probably defeat ballistic armor with either of them as well. The velocity of the 5.7 is much faster than the hottest 9mm loads, and close to double that of the hottest .45acp out of the same barrel length due to the light weight of the bullet, which is basically a rifle round. Makes a nice loud noise, kinda like a .357 magnum, but it kicks like a .22 or .25. Very controllable, and very accurate with a steady finger out to distances where the 9mm and the .45acp would just be digging in the dirt. The bottleneck design would probably result in more reliable feeding; I haven't had any feed problems yet, after 400 rounds, even while breaking it in. The overall compactness of the round (28mm in length) makes it practical to use in an actual pistol-sized frame, and still have decent velocity. The size of the round also allows a capacity of 20 rounds in a single magazine, whereas the 9mm would have maybe 15, and the .45acp would have maybe 8 or 9 rounds in a similarly-sized pistol

The Desert Eagle .44 Magnum used to be my favorite handgun; it puts BIG holes in paper
The FN 57 took its place at the top spot. That thing is like shooting a frickin' laser pistol. The round simply hits exactly where you were aiming. That's at 10, 20, 50, 100 yards. It feels like a waterpistol at first; definitely a strange fit in the hand. The rounds look like "min-AR" ammunition. This makes the grip wider than most pistols. Due to the long rounds and how "hot" they fire (incredible fps), your first trigger pull is a surprise. You expect quite a kick, but instead there is none. A HUGE report, but no noticeable kick. It is less, IMO, than even a .22 (I've got a nice Walther P22; the FN kick is equivalent/less than that!) This is due, in part, to the spring placement: on the barrel, rather than on a rod. This brings the recoil straight back, with no barrel rise. It is a phenomenal piece of engineering. Only drawback to this weapon is price. The pistol weighs in at $1100. The ammunition is pricey, to say the least. If you have an AR and bemoan the prices for ammo for that platform, wait 'til you see what the 5.7x28 runs! Still, the FN 57 is a thing of beauty; the best-engineered handgun I have ever had the privilege to use. 5.7x28 next to a 5.56x45

Just got back from the range. Shot my Mossberg 500 for the umpteenth round. I bought it in 1996 and it's stellar. Smooth pump action with no problems. Silk like silk.

Just ordered a 10-pack of 30-round AR-15 mags, and I don't even have an AR-15 at the moment. But I plan on getting one some time next year. I had to do it while prices are decent, and before any possible post-election hi-cap mag ban.

Holy shit, the 5.7 has a muzzle velocity of 2300 fps!
It would still fragment within 100 yards using premium ammo. Good God. Although it has slightly less energy than a .45 ACP, the fragmentation alone would make it a deadly bullet. |

I will post pics when I get the scope mounted along with the Harris Bipod.
Here is an exact match of what I got: I purchased the upper and lower from www.762sass.com seperately and had them put a Magpul PRS stock on for $200 extra. Ended up costing me $995 for the upper and $670 for a lower including the PRS stock. $1665 for a PRS equipped National Match rifle that would have cost around $23-2500 if purchased complete. Anyway, I already have an AR-10A4 with a 18x Redfield Revenge Varmint scope (awesome scope for cheap) that I consistantly drill 10" targets at 550 yards with 168 grain HPBT. It was time to step up to a 1000 yard rifle. I started searching for an AR-10T, but ended up with the NM which is nearly the same anyway. I hope I can break it in tomorrow since it will be 60 degrees with only 10-15 mph wind. I plan on purchasing a Bushnell Elite 6500 or Nikon Monarch 32x for the NM with Armalite Mount. Harris Bypod is a must, too. I ****ing love long range shooting. |
