The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

I get that people, at this point, haven't been able to peg Barkley. Great junior year, average senior year, all the intangibles and size but the arm is questionable, so I get it. You don't want to double down this early in the process. He may wow in late March. Actually, I hope he does so at least there's some reference point.

But the Smith case is weird, if not odd. Great leader, high completion passer, measured out well, spoke well, years of game film. He seems to have everything scouts look for in a rookie QB, if not far more.

So what's the real deal? I refuse to believe its skin color. So what is it?
Around the KC area it seems that most of his detractors only saw one or two of his games and that would be the KSU game and the Tech Game. Combine that with Kiper and other talking heads going on about how bad the quarterbacks are and you get a lot of people with a bad image of Geno. I'd imagine the actual NFL scouts out there like him plenty but of course you'll never know until draft day.

I don't trust anyone until they prove something. Reid hasn't proved shit here, and if he lets Albert walk to draft an LT and bring in another teams scrub qb then he can eat a big giant shitburger, along with you and any other true fan who gladly takes it up the ass without question.
I'm sorry but matt cassel isn't as proven as alex smith was before getting traded. Alex smith played well for 1.5 years improving during the whole harbaugh tenure and has played well in the playoffs. He has skills that make for a consistent quarterback like his football smarts and intelligence and his short to medium range accuracy. Those skills can't be taken away and he will alway sbe efficient and limit mistakes wherever he goes.

Cassel is different. He was playing well for a time because he was just connecting with guys down the field. Thing were going right for him and it allowed him to play with confidence.

no matter where alex ends up you can be sure that at least he'll make good decisions, be efficient, and put the team in good situations. People might call that game manager but if you get a win, it should simply called game winner.

Many scouts say he showed alot of inconsistency and he likes to stick on his first progression alot

Cassel took over a team that in the previous year went 18-1 and one of the best teams of all time.

Putting a team in good situations and making good decisions isnt what the team needs. The Chiefs need an attacking qb. one that says im going to take this game over.

We already been though this game manager shit for far to long. IT DOESNT ****ING WORK!

I dont know how Some Chiefs fans dont get it. 40 ****ing years and they still think maybe it will.

That's what I don't get. His numbers were off the ****ing charts. I can't wrap my head around why people aren't nailing this guy as the definite, hands down, number 1 pick in this draft. Everything about him screams excellence.

Someone on Facebook said Alex Smith was like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get. While that's reeruned, and not funny, all I could say was that that was bullshit.

We've had Alex's twin brother here for the last 4 years. Look at their respective stats. They're identical. If Smith is like a box of chocolates, it's a bunch of chocolates filled with shit.

man if you think cassel is smith you are out of your mind! I guarantee you every single gm would take smith over cassel. He's not just better he's way better. Cassel was never an efficient qb and never had alex smith's stats ever. Alex smith even in the dark niner ages never had a year like cassel had last season.

Smith will get you a play-off win or 2 but he's never gonna win a SB.

What? Alex Smith has had a QB ranking of 82, 90, and 104 respectively over the last 3 years. He is definitely not ideal but he is a helluva lot better then Cassel.

Post a complete breakdown, year by year for him. I would do it but I'm on a phone. He has marked improvement.

Put it like this, take his very best season in his career.... Cassel has 2 seasons better than that.

Also, Alex Smith has started 13 games more than Cassel. So there's no excuse for him having the same or even worse stats than Cassel.
