You're gonna take a pudgy, unathletic spread left tackle with the top pick in the draft when you already have a solid left tackle?

I wouldn't give Albert a Duane Brown contract, I don't think.
But instead of filling his spot with 1.1, I'd sure as Hell rather play Stephenson at LT and Schwartz at RT. Which, of course, goes against the win-now mentality that trading for Alex Smith necessitates in the first place. |

I wouldn't give him a Duane Brown contract either, but if the choices are give him that contract or have to spend the highest pick in franchise history on his replacement, I'd vote for the former.

And by that metric, Albert is better than any LT available in the draft or FA.

I like how Albert's oft injured now. Prior to his back issues last year he'd missed 4 starts in 4 years, including 1 in 2010 and zero in 2011.

So how good in your minds does the LT we take at 1 have to be for this to be justifiable?

And you do realize that taking a better LT who will be healthy for a cheaper price so that we can lock up future players is logical, right? No. Nevermind. You don't.

If you think Albert is about the 12ish best LT in the game, obviously the new LT has to be better. Add in what we are using to take him, I'd say he has to be fairly close to top 5-7 ish pretty quick.

Because drafting a QB would also be cheaper than having Alex Smith on a 2 year $15 million deal and it would help us lock up future players.

Reid wants to win now and no QB in this draft is ready to start. Don't hate the messenger..
