Nonsense. If he has more back problems during the tourney he isn't going #1. No shot at all. GMs are wary of another Sam Bowie/Greg Oden situation.

All the signs are pointing toward him leaving. The newest of which being that the Embiid family wanted the LA specialist to look at his back. Seems they want to be convinced that he is healthy enough to play without risking another injury, and to take it another step to say (at least in their minds) there was a chance they would want him shut down for the year. Being projected in the top 3 this year and having a family concerned about (further) injury risk is not a combination indicative of a guy coming back another year.

I said it at the time and will think it until proven otherwise – Embiid’s ticket to the 2014 NBA draft was punched when he escaped a torn up knee against TCU.

We should want Embiid to go. It's great for the program, it's great for the kid.
But dear lord if he came back we'd be the odds-on favorite for the title, with only Duke as a possible contender. |

Even if that were true (and I think he'll be fine, plenty of Cs have learned on the job), it's still best that he goes now from his perspective. You can't do better than #1 pick in the draft.

Sure you can. I'd rather go #5 and have a 15 year career than go #1 and not get a second contract. Coming back to KU is all about the long-term success, not just where you're drafted.

Now, in theory, you're right. If money and injuries weren't factors in this decision, he'd be far better off staying. But they are. And as such, the guarantee of the NBA now over another year of what essentially amounts to indentured servitude in the NCAA is a much better option for him. Especially because, from a draft perspective, his stock isn't going to get any higher than this. |

It's not him going #1 overall that should be his monetary reasoning, because the rookie contract is shit.. and not that big a difference between #1 and #5. Where he makes his money is first FA deal he signs... it's all about getting that clock ticking as soon as possible to get past that Rookie contract. So no, he should not go back to school... even if this back injury were to drop him down to #15 instead of #1 overall... because it's not about the amount of that first paycheck, it's about speeding up that second and maximizing that time till he's too old to milk it any further... if he does have health concerns, it would be even more of a reason for him to go now... and not to stay.

But that argument has been made before, and round and round we go.

Where is Embiid going to learn more about how to play basketball
A) At KU, where there are restrictions on practice time etc B) The NBA where his entire life is devoted to basketball year round, and would be in a position where he has the best facilities, best coaches, etc? If you're the projected 1st pick, you go. No matter what. |

He gone.
And I'm cool with it. We'll all be cool with it when Turner and Cliff are eating souls next year. |
