*.* 2014 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2014! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

No one else started it so here it is!

**From the 2013 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

I rarely do cardio. My resting heart rate is 55-65. I get that from lifting heavy weights. How is that possible?! Oh, because these workouts cause me to get my heart rate up, burn an insane amount of calories and increase my resting metabolic rate.
This is simply not true and you know it and Silock knows it.

The only measure of cardiovascular fitness should be something practical. Can you go up a few flights of stairs without being completely out of breath? Congrats, you're fit.

If you aspire to simply be a pussy then you are accurate.

I still think there is a combination that equals fit.

There is a ace in Texas that involves bench pressing your weight and running a half marathon. 13.1 miles.

The more time you loft you your weight it drops off time on your half as credit.

Its a concept that takes strength and endurance both into account. As I have transitioned from a lifter to a runner i find this very interesting because it creates a crossroad.

If you were a Seal or any other type of Spec Ops guy this is where the rubber meets the road.
I wasn't targeting you with my initial post. It's the other poster who keeps coming in here WAY off base and spouting garbage.

Running is important to you, and that's fine. You are more fit than me with running and I am more fit than you with lifting (**** you bench!). I just hope you realize that the definition of fit should not just be centered on the 1970's approach that simply relates to running. Because that's how it comes off when you talk about it. You yourself aren't fit by my definition because you are weak in squats/deads just as I am not fit in your definition because I don't run a sub 6 min mile.

I follow a lifting log of a lifter who deadlifts 3x his bodyweight, squats 2.5x bodyweight and benches 2x his bodyweight. He also runs a mile sub 6 minutes. That is as pretty ****ing fit as it gets.

So I'm a pussy if I can't run an 8-minute mile or something?

I do cardio. I just don't believe in running long distances. It sucks. It's not practical. It hurts my knees. **** that.

So by your stated definition, I am fit since I run 55-65 bpm. And I do less than 30 minutes of cardio a week.

It's not UNtrue; it's just more complicated than that.

The problem is that you can still have a great cardiovascular system from lifting weights, but not be very good at running. There's more to running than simply heart pumping blood. Like anything else, the more you do it, the more efficient at it your body becomes. This is true for both lifting and running. There are neuromuscular adaptations that happen in both activities that lend themselves to becoming good at something. For a lifter, not using muscles to run doesn't mean that they're not fit. It just means that they aren't good at running. Similarly, a runner could have the same amount of muscle mass as a lifter, but not be able to lift nearly as much because they don't lift all the time. Again, neuromuscular adaptations.

He weights 175 and a straight up ripped freak. In the military too. Great lifter to watch and help with routines. Very smart.

You did a great job of losing a ton of weight and getting into shape.

I dont bash people who cant run fast because I believe if you are running at any pace you are doing good.

I have been a lifter way longer than a runner. Until I started running I didn't understand the difference.

I am not bashing anyone here, but I will say that to me total fitness is muscular and cardiovascular. That my opinion.

Some people break the mold. Some people can do jack and shit and bench 315, I worked with a guy who never lifted and looked like a beast.

Just dont expect the exception to be the rule. Seems like most people think they are the exception.
