There's no way I'd put Rivers ahead of guys that have had good success and SB rings... some of them (Ben, Eli) are flawed just as Rivers is and have been saddled up with inconsistent team production. But, to me - he's done nothing to put himself between those 2 groups.

No, this has nothing to do with recent performances and yes, I'm looking at careers. Not just this season or last week. Careers. The body of work for Rivers doesn't support him being in that range of group 1 or group 2 to me, but it's just my opinion. Not asking you to agree.

Rivers, Eli and Ben were all in the same draft with careers beginning in 2004. This doesn't take into account the post season success, but we can go there if you like. During the regular season, Rivers falls behind his two peers from that same draft... and Flacco has proven to be at the very least, on par with what Rivers has done.
W/L 77/49 - Rivers 83/66 - Eli 93/47 - Ben 62/32 - Flacco (career began in 2008) Completion % 64.6 - Rivers 58.6 - Eli 63.3 - Ben 60.3 - Flacco Yards 31,939 - Rivers 34,937 - Eli 33,759 - Ben 21,093 - Flacco TD / INT 217 / 102 - Rivers 227 / 169 - Eli (crazy INTs) 216 / 119 - Ben 120 / 73 - Flacco

Per game avg Rivers is ahead of Ben and Eli in yards and TD's by quite a bit. |

You can say that Eli has the worst winning % with 56%, followed by Rivers with 61% while Ben and Flacco have 66% winning percentages in games played. If you want to see who ranks higher in a per game stat war, go for it. I'm not basing my rankings purely on stat wars, but provided the stats below to show how they compared - each has a minimum of 6 seasons. It's a team sport, so having better teams helps the %'s with any QB. Rivers took over a great team and they fell apart. In 8 seasons, he's had a record better than .500 4 times - if they go 2-0 down the stretch, he'll make it 5 out of 8. It's not Rivers' fault that the team has traded away or let go a number of their playmakers, but that doesn't keep the "great ones" from continuing to do great things and win. That's what keeps him out of that grouping for me...

Rivers completion % is superior to all three, and this year he's been on fire with 70.3% (1st in the league over your precious Payton). Plus, he has a better in TD/INT ratio over his career.
He's clearly a better QB than the other 3. If you're using SBs as a measurement, Peyton is behind Eli and Ben. (just silly) |
