At least 10 moviegoers were killed and 39 injured at a cinema in the Colorado city of Aurora in the Denver suburbs. They were attending a midnight showing of the new Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

The theater was packed with a lot of people, many of them young fans, at the time the shooting started, 9news reports. The violence erupted some 15 minutes after the movie started, witnesses said.

Some say that when they first heard the shooting, they thought it was some new type of special effect.

Local media reports that two gunmen were involved in the rampage. An explosive device was set off during the shooting, injuring several people.

Witnesses said the gunmen were probably wearing body armor and gas masks and used some kind of a tear gas bomb in the attack.

Some reports say police have apprehended one of the assailants while the second one is still at large.

Police have cleared people from the scene over fears that another explosive device might be on the premises.

Aurora medical services were alerted to attend to the large number of injured

Maybe this is a twisted thing to say, but if a guy does something like this and then kills himself, I at least respect the fact that he's willing to go down doing it. I disagree. I hate it whenever a coward kills somebody and then kills himself so that he escapes having to pay the consequences for his crime. He's going to die anyway. I'd rather see him die by lethal injection and have time to think about the fact that he is going to be executed.

This was absolutely far more than a guy left out of the loop or an ex with her new boyfriend.

The guy died his hair to look like the Joker from the previous Batman movie. He wired his house with explosives that would have taken him likely weeks to put together.

A woman who died in the movie theater shooting in Denver had previously escaped a shooting at a mall in Toronto in June, saying an “odd feeling” compelled her to leave the shopping center, she wrote in a blog post about the experience.

Jessica Ghawi had recently moved from San Antonio to Denver, kens5.com reported. An aspiring sportscaster, she had gone to see the movie “Batman: The Dark Knight Rises,” with a friend from Texas who was injured in the shooting, the television station reported.

Ghawi (who wrote under the name Jessica Redfield) said on her blog that she was visiting Toronto in June and stopped by a popular shopping mall to get something to eat when she got an “odd feeling” in her chest.

“This empty, almost sickening feeling won’t go away. I noticed this feeling when I was in the Eaton Center in Toronto just seconds before someone opened fire in the food court,” she wrote in her blog. “An odd feeling which led me to go outside and unknowingly out of harm‘s way. It’s hard for me to wrap my mind around how a weird feeling saved me from being in the middle of a deadly shooting.”......

NBC News confirmed Friday from Ghawi's family that she had died from the overnight rampage. Her brother was flying to Denver Friday morning, her father, Nick Ghawi, told NBC.

On his blog, jordanghawi.com, Jessica's brother Jordan wrote about the moment he heard the news.

"At approximately 0215 CST, I received an hysterical, and almost unintelligible, phone call from my mother stating that my sister, Jessica Ghawi, had been shot while attending the midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Denver, CO. I was able to contact the man that was with my sister, mutual friend Brent Lowak, who stated that they were in the theatre when an incendiary device was fired into the crowd and that shots rang out immediately afterwards. Brent further stated that he took two rounds and that my sister took one round followed by an additional round which appeared to strike her in the head. At this time, I do not have confirmation that she is alive or dead."

I agree, with the situation those people were in, there could have been even more carnage. Thank god it wasn't as bad as it could have been. If it were stadium style seating, which i assume it was, then people would have to come towards the shooter in order to exit. He would have had them all lined up like a herd of cattle.

You can't hardly see in a theater to begin with, it was probably impossible with gas in the air and wearing a gas mask. You'd have to bet he was just firing randomly not caring who he mowed down.

one guy in one of the articles had a good approach (assuming the gunman wasn't just spraying lead, but was actually aiming at random targets) ; he couldn't get out, so he just played dead. might be a good plan if you can't escape and had no alternative.

Yeah that leads me to this question. What would you guys do if you were in that theater? Assuming you weren't in the closest section to the shooter, would you have just hit the deck and prayed?
