another reason why its hard to blame players: lets presume you make the leap and decide the players aren't as good as you thought. (I'm not there yet, btw. Small sample size and all that)

What do you do then? I guess at that point you give up the season and resign yourself to probably not winning next year either. People don't want to do that, its easier to think this is a great team if only that damned manager would stop screwing things up.

What exactly then is causing the hitters to completely change the approaches that got them to this point? I'm curious. I'm sure these vets have made it a habit to make changes every year based on the whim of a manager.

These are veteran professional athletes. They do what they want to do, they do what got them to where they are. They're not making any significant changes to that. For whatever reason, it's not working right now. Everyone is pressing because they're all very aware of how shitty they're playing collectively.
