Eric Berry

We know what it's going to cost to keep him. Question is he worth the money? Has this defense missed him?

I think there's a noticeable difference without Berry against the run. The pass defense looks similar though.

For a team in cap trouble I don't think Berry is a must re-sign guy.

A Ryan scheme asks a lot from a strong safety. They do traditional in the box responsibilities like a tj ward. But they also have to have the speed to blitz which is why Cleveland paid a premium for Whitner. They also have to have significant football Smarts... Unlike most strong safeties, Ryan safeties play closer to the line and often act as an additional linebacker. Main reason for that is so they can make adjustments. Namely, it's berry who usually decides what he is going to do, and he has to communicate that to his teammates. So if he blitzes, he needs his teammates to adjust around him. I often wonder if maybe this is the part we are missing. Does berry have the football iq we think he does?
Again, you are an idiot. Berry was an absolute beast, and the best SS in football last season.

Or maybe it's Sutton... this team blitzes Berry a ton more than they do Abdullah. I have no clue. In either event, will be very interesting to see what the Chiefs do when Berry comes back.
At this time last season we looked like a top 10 D all time on pace to set all kinds of records.

Abdullah has played very well filling in, but our Run D has been shit, and a big part of that is because Berry is not in there.

While berry is a solid tackler, great in run support, and is great at tackling guys for a loss, DJ is the real reason this D looks like shit in run defense. Without your defensive captain, without your leading tackler, you're going to look awful, with or without Berry.

While DJ might not have the TFL's that Berry does, Berry doesn't have the 1-3 yard stops that DJ has now made his bread and butter in the NFL. Granted, Poe is doing everything he can right now to step up, you just can't replace DJ. While you also cannot replace Berry as a player, he's replaceable in this system for run support, DJ is not.

Eric Berry

Makes All-Pro team. Leads all safeties in sacks, QB hits, and hurries. Notches as many tackles for loss as the Defensive MVP of the league. Defense does the second best job in the league at limiting TE production, which was often his main responsibility. Returns 2 INTs for TDs.

I have said that I think berry's a great player.

I am trying to figure out why it doesn't feel like there's any major drop-off since berry left. The run d looks suspect but of course that will be the case when you lose dj and devito who were both outstanding against the run. Even though I like bailey, Tyson Jackson was also excellent against the run.

It's a fair question to ask. And no, I think it's hard to call someone the best strong safety in football when you play on a defense as bad as it was at the end of last year.

All he does is blitz thats why he gets sacks and tackles for loss. He blitzes more than any safety in the league of course he's gonna get some sacks and TFLs. However, he can't tackle moving laterally and is nothing special in one on one coverage (see Gates, Antonio). Berry has always been more myth than reality. His probowls are on account of him getting hyped up and drafted high and the stupid fan voting that pro bowls are based off of.

This is one of the dumbest things I've ever read on here.

Eric Berry can't tackle laterally? SNR, cue the Nedry pic from Jurassic Park.

There you go showing your ignorance.

Antonio Gates

If this were 2010 you might have a point. But it's 2014 and last season Berry held Gates to 3 catches for 21 yards and no TDs. That's the same Gates that just ****ing ass raped your oh-so-precious Kam Chancellor for 3 TDs a few weeks ago.

"All he does is blitz". Uhhhh, well ok. If that's the case then how do you expect him to rack up a ton of INTs and pass break ups? It's pretty incredible actually that he was able to completely lock down some of the game's best TEs and return two INTs for TDs when "all he was doing was blitzing"..

"He can't tackle moving laterally". I don't even know where to begin here. I'm just going to assume you're an idiot and move on from this.

Pro Bowl voting is only 1/3 fans now, fyi. The other 2/3s are players and coaches.

Our defense was a disaster the second half of last year. They were a disaster early on. For some reason, they seemed to turn a corner when we lost dj and berry. Considering that we lost 2 pro bowlers and 3 starters, most of us expected this defense to be a shit show. It's been much better than people expected.
