mY DAD served in the Army during the Korean conflict. He was drafted and ended up at West Point he didn't have to go oversease because my mom had a pre-mature baby that almost died. This was in 1952 and I am guessing it was pretty extreme for that time. Dad ended up teaching at West Point.
My mom lost 3 brothers to WWII. One died on the Beaches of Normandy, one died fighting Japanese and one died on the Autobon during the occupation after WWII. My brother (the same one that was premie) served in the Army during Vietnam, but he went to Germany. Currently have a BIL stationed in Washington State getting ready to deploy in August. |

we have the telegrams that my grandmother received informing her that her sons had been killed. My mom says that grandma kind of went nuts after the last one.
I can't imagine the heartbreak that would encompass. I have the banner that hung in her window with the four stars. |

I get it, this year more than most...and thought I got it before.
I'm in the process of burying my grandpa, a WWII vet and medic from France to the occupation of Germany. My brother, is home on a short pass for that event, en route to his re-call tour to Iraq. Thanks to those who have and do serve. |

And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free. And I won't forget the men and women who died, who gave that right to me. And when I was at Wal-Mart today, I saw a gentleman who was wearing a WWII Vet hat. I walked up to him, looked at him, and simply said, "Thank you for your service." I like to think that I would made his day better.

The conversation came up this weekend about my grandpa from my mom's side he was from the Ukrane and was in a concentration camp. The story goes since he was taken alive he would be killed by his own country and or killed by the germans, he made it over to america. My other grandpa was in the us navy. They never talked about WII, and the one from the Ukraine died when I was like 9, would have made for an interesting talk if they ever talked about it.
