damn dude, I feel sorry for your kids.

You see those as bad things, I see them as memories that I would not trade for anything in the world.

This. Take pictures, spend time with them, make memories, cherish them, do things with them, be a part of their lives.

The time flies by, my youngest son (19) left for the Navy two weeks ago.

Wow, just wow. You only mention the not so pleasant things. And even some of those really aren't as bad as you make it sound. There are way more good things that outweigh the difficult parts of parenthood. If you truly feel that way about your kids then I doubt you will be having that beer and life discussion with your son in 20 years. He will probably go as far away from you as possible.

My kids know they have an honest father, not a fluffer like you.

I enjoy my kids much better now that they're older. But I point out to expecting fathers the reality of the situation so they don't feel guilty about the feelings they are going to experience. It's really hard for men and women to become 1st time parents. Honesty is a good thing - you should try it sometime.

Your life as you know it does not end but rather changes. Sure, long gone are the spur of the moment juvenile activities that dominate one's youth, but even those activities can proceed because the only thing that is needed is planning.

I've had just my son and I solely for the past 5 years. During that time I've almost completed my bachelors degree, dated several women, done tons of fun activities (some with him and some without---and the ones that were with him I cherish the most) and I've had no help. Hell not even child support.

I, for one, hope that this life is over schtick is nothing more than a pathetic attempt at comedy. If, after looking into your child's just once, doesn't want you to discard a life as "you once knew it" then perhaps counseling would be a useful endeavor. I say this not trying to be malicious, but rather to call your attention that you are objectifying your children as the source of your misery and that is something that, no matter how well you guard your words, is quite detectable.

Like I said before, I traded the juvenile spur of the moment actions and what I got instead was undying loyalty and trust. The thrill and the excitement of cultivating a human being who is honest, trustworthy, and mentally strong. I am not perfect by any means, but I can honestly say that my children have given me no sense of misery and I can honestly say I wouldn't have it any other way.

Congrats! Enjoying grandkids myself, all the old Tonka toys and trikes are getting another workout.

Advice? If you aren't already a patient person, learn to be one; first the wife and her changes (you are now #2, and that's the way it is), and then the kid(s) in a real short time when they are mobile little sponges that absorb everything around them even when you think they aren't paying attention or don't understand what is going on. Enjoy the adventure, one of the best life has to offer.
