I just got back from the day -long party in downtown Houston. Paul Tags was here along with other NFL brass. The word "leaked" out that the team would be called the TEXANS before the official announcement later this evening. The team colors will be RED, BLUE and WHITE and the logo features a skull of a bull with an outline of the state flag and a star where to mark Houston. It looks cool and so do the uniforms. I was concerned that everything would look like the Arena League rip offs but this logo and the uniforms are clean. I'm just glad that they did the RIGHT thing and named the team TEXANS. The state's last pro football team is now named after the first one! Still a Chiefs fan till I die !!

Thanks Russ, my bad

there is a poll on the Texans site - Who do the fans want as their first opponent.
KC is listed as one of the five choices.

Of course the Chiefs are listed, they're many Chiefs fans down here in Houston. There was ALWAYS alot of RED at Oiler games! Some of us were even born here, others are transplants from the Midwest and still others adopted the Chiefs after the Oilers bailed. KC is still the closest city to Houston with an AFC team. Remember, as much of a JERK that Bud Adams is, he was very instrumental in forming the AFL with Lamar Hunt. Without Bud, Lamar's task would have been next to impossible. Some of us do remember the old days and what it took to start the AFL, thus there is a connection between the two cities. Shoot, Lamar was Bud's guest at this past Super Bowl. The Oilers, like the Chiefs/Texans won a couple of AFL Championships (I believe the first 2) and have BLOWN many playoff games too. The last ine being to the Chiefs back in '94. I LOVED IT! People don't realize this but the Dallas Cowboys were Texas' 3rd professional football team.(behind the Texans and Oilers) The name is fitting and it does the history of the old AFL PROUD! I'm getting season tickets so I'll be guaranteed a good seat when the Chiefs come here. Hey, that formula worked out fine with the Oilers. I never missed a the Chiefs game in Houston and I don't plan on doing so!

The logo is awesome! I agree with hawaiianboy, Jerry Jones is the devil!

Now I don't have to rely on "America's Team" for entertainment.

BTW, are you guys gonna cry when the Texans kick sh*t out of you?

I've lived in Houston all my life and am a life long Chiefs fan, but believe it or not BOTH Bud Adams and Jerry Jones wanted to get a team back here in Houston. Adams voted for Houston over Los Angeles to be granted the new expansion team. However, Jerry Jones initially votes for L.A. Once it was clear that L.A. was not going to get a good staadium deal together and he saw how good the Houston deal was, he quickly led the charge in favor of Houston....Go figure!

Love the look of the logo and all. I don't know if the name will ever grow on me. I get the whole history thing, but....I just don't think I like the name. Not that I have a better suggestion.

I'm with you, Tomahawk. History aside, the name just doesn't do it for me. They should have gotten the rights to the Oilers name, the same way that Cleveland did with the Browns.

Milkman,
They didn't want the the rights to the name "Oilers", plus NOBODY in Houston would have gone for that one. Everyone here doesn't want this team to be associated to Bud Adams in any way. As far as the name goes, it will hurt from a national marketing perspective, but not from a state perspective. Most here in Texas couldn't care less what those on the "outside" think about things. As long as WE LIKE IT - who cares about anyone else?? Things have been done that way in "thses parts" for years.

Tx,
I heard an interview with Bob McNair (Is that the right name? Having a brain fart) about 6 months ago on XTRA Sports 690 (San Diego) and he told the show's host that the #1 reason that the new Houston franchise would not be named the Oilers was due to the money they would have to pay Bud Adams for the right to use it.

Milkman,
You got the name correct, it is Bob McNair. However, there's more to the story. You are correct - it would have cost a lot of $$$$ to get the naming rights from Bud Adams.

Anyway, what happened was that Bud Adams said that he thought the Houston franchise should be named "Oilers" to preserve tradition. And then the REAL Bud Adams surfaced because then came the , Oh by the way....you will have to pay me MILLIONS to do this. What a SLEEZE BAG - JERK! Anyway, McNair was actually considering doing just that, but the media ran a poll and asked the public if they wanted to keep the name Oilers and about 85% said NO WAY! (at the time, the public was not informed of the cost) Well, armed with that, McNair told Bud to stick it up his Adams!
