Thursday, June 30, 2011

Starting tomorrow, drivers on some highways will be able to go 75 miles per hour.
The Kansas Department of Transportation has been placing the new speed limit signs along highways Thursday in preparation for the change on Friday.
According to a news release from the Kansas Department of Transportation, the following location will see the speed limit change:

• I-135 from a half-mile north of the 85th Street interchange in Harvey County to I-70 near Salina.
• I-70 from the Colorado state line to just west of Topeka in Shawnee County.
• I-35 from U.S. 50 just east of Emporia to a mile east of the Sunflower/Edgerton Interchange in Johnson County.
• U.S. 81 from I-70 near Salina north to K-106.
• U.S. 69 from just six-tenths of a mile north of the north junction of U.S. 54 in Bourbon County to the 199th Street Interchange in Johnson County.
• The Kansas Turnpike from the Oklahoma state line to K-7 in Wyandotte County.

A total of 807 miles of Kansas roads will be 75 miles per hour.

KDOT hopes to have all the signs changed in time for the 4th of July holiday weekend.

I live right off a highway in Kansas. Thank God it's not one of them they raised the speed limit on.

I already have to be doing 65 to leave my driveway.

Remember when semis were the fastest vehicles on the highways?

I've got mixed feelings on this. I'm thinking it will do more harm than good. They're essentially increasing the variance of speed of the vehicles on the highway. And I really question whether that's a good idea. Semis and crappy cars aren't going to be cruising along at 75-80 with the rest of the cars. This is going to cause the impatient assholes to drive even worse than they do now. Having some people going 80+, and others going 55-60, makes it that much harder for idiot drivers to determine how quickly they're approaching another vehicle. It will probably raise fatality rates, which will in turn cause our stupid government to try and implement more driving regulations.

I feel old.

Your worry is valid, but only because dipshits in this state don't understand what the different lanes are for.

There shouldn't be any speed limit. Just drive as fast as you want. It's not like you're going to hit anything.

Eh, it's not like they're doing it at I35 and I435. It's 5mph on rural highways... other states do it, and I'm sure the change wasn't taken lightly. People who barely go 65-70 will now barely go 70-75... people who drive for miles in the fast lane, spend 3 minutes in the blind spot of a semi, and break at every little thing will still be on the road, cussing at those crazy assholes who want to drive 80.

The only thing worse than driving through western Kansas is driving through mid and western Nebraska (I-80) and eastern Colorado/Wyoming. I'll throw in western OK and TX. That ain't God's country, that's torture.

At least Nebraska is 75mph... try going between St. Louis and Chicago... just as flat and boring, but at 65mph with a truck speed of 55mph and trucks constantly passing one another at 55-60mph.

I'd say eastern Colorado is just as bad, but I'll take the drive through Nebraska over the drive through Kansas any day. At least in Nebraska a good chunk of the interstate follows the Platte River, so you get to see some trees and water. IMO, Nebraska is more comparable to central Illinois.

All suck, but to varying degrees.

Western Kansas - SuckX10 (Excruciating, mind-numbing, psyche-scarring)
Eastern Colorado - SuckX9.5 (gets a .5 break because at least you're out of Kansas)
Central Illinois SuckX8.5 (the shitty speed limit makes the difference)
Eastern/Central South Dakota SuckX8
Nebraska - SuckX8
Eastern Wyoming SuckX6 (at least the terrain starts to break up a bit).

Never been to western Oklahoma or any part of Texas. And I'm good with that.

Of course making that boring ass trip can cause brain damage
It is still nowhere near as boring as eastern Colorado border to 30 miles outside Denver.

There is plenty of scenic viewing from KC to about Salina. After that it is just flat.

The entire stretch from St Louis until the Indiana border is boring as shit.
