Morris Update From Realteam.com

From www.realteam.com
SLY-MOTION WITH VERMEIL

As a first-round draft pick in the 2000 NFL draft, expectations for Chiefs wide receiver Sylvester Morris were high entering his rookie campaign. The Jackson State product proceeded to go out on the field and more than live up to his pre- and post-draft hype, hauling in 48 passes for 678 yards and three touchdowns.

Heading into the 2001 off-season, his situation was looking even brighter. A new, Supewr Bowl-winning head coach. A new quarterback. And, perhaps most importantly, a new offensive system that could take advantage of his 6-3, 205-pound frame.

All of those hopes, however, came to a crashing halt yesterday as Morris suffered an injury to the ACL in his right knee during the club's final mini-camp of the off-season. While no definitive prognosis has been reached, there is a very real possibility that Morris could be lost for the entire 2001 campaign.

In a just-completed phone conversation with Dick Vermeil, the head coach told RealTeam that the injury suffered by Morris would indeed require the operation that has been widely reported the last few hours. No timetable has been set for the surgical procedure, which does not make Vermeil a happy mini-camping head coach.

"He has an injury to his knee that's going to require an operation. Our doctors would like to go tomorrow, but his agent may have other ideas," Vermeil told RealTeam. "They may want to send him out (to have their own doctors look at him), maybe have some so-called specialist look at it."

Vermeil still seemed somewhat stunned over the scope of the injury, which occurred during a seemingly innocuous passing drill. The receiver was running a "streak" pattern when a pass was overthrown, forcing both Morris and defensive back William Bartee to jump for the ball. According to Vermeil, the two "kind of bumped into each other, and Sylvester just landed wrong."

The Chiefs are having a very successful and very productive off-season program, with the implementation of the offense under the direction of offensive coordinator Al Saunders being widely reported as ahead of schedule. While the injury to Morris certainly is a blow to the club, it certainly doesn't sound a death knell to the progress that has been made.

"(Losing Morris) can't help you. Whenever you lose a starter, it's going to hurt. But we have to move on," Vermeil said. "I feel bad for the kid, but we have to continue with what we've been doing."

As to who they will continue doing that with, Vermeil stated that, as it stands right now, rookie third-round pick Marvin "Snoop" Minnis will jump into the fray as Morris' replacement. Larry Parker, who has spent the past two seasons in Kansas City, is another very viable candidate.

Vermeil also mentioned the possibility of signing a veteran still on the free agent market. Derrick Mayes and Kirby Dar Dar are two of those possibilities, Vermeil told RealTeam.
This is just a major bummer...there's a good chance that a WR will never be the same after an ACL/PCL tear. Can't make cuts anymore...at the very least, he'll be 85% again in TWO YEARS.

I don't think, however, that we have to rush into anything. I really think Ricky Hall has what it takes, and Klemic can play.

I can't believe you guys are talking about Herman Moore, Yancey Thigpen, and Sean Dawkins? Do you really want to take that many steps back? The reason we brought in this staff was to change things, get younger, and compete. Screw bringing in injury-prone, washed-up has-beens... (how's that for hyphenation :D)

The reason I wouldn't mind seeing a guy like Herman Moore on our roster is due to experience and composure...I don't want a roster loaded with senior citizens but by the same token if the game is on the line in the AFC Championship I don't want to have some inexperienced guy from Mudville U pissing down his leg either.

jl80,

By the time the AFC championship comes around the rookie really shouldn't be considered a rookie. He would have played in 18 - 19 pro games by that point given he played in all of the pre-season and regular season...

Correct but if he doesn't have any experience playing in huge games with the whole world watching then he will be much more apt to piss down his leg...

bkk,

I hope so...But after watching R.Goosen 3 putt from 12 feet out proves that even though he had played in over 100 tourney's as a pro until you played in the big one you may not know how to handle the pressure.

After the initial shock wore off I realize that htismaqe is right. A veteran castoff may slow down the development of the entire offense. I think we plug in Minnis, and move the other rookies up. Its not like Sly was a seasoned vet anyway.

I didnt mean to minimize the loss of Morris. Sly was a good talent and losing him hurts, but every panic signing we have ever made was bad in the long run. I could live with Mayes, but I won't cry if we just play the rookies and fight through this.

Herman Moore?

Do we really NEED playoff experience SO BAD THIS YEAR that we'd bring in a me-first whiner like him?

NO.
Last season, Morris started 14 games and set a Chiefs rookie record with 48 receptions. He also was second among receivers behind Derrick Alexander, with 678 yards and three touchdowns.
A Chiefs rookie record. After reading that I feel worse than I did before. I hope my Chiefs can shake this one off...
