Dumb idea of the day: Let Alex Smith play out his contract
http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2014/4...t-his-contract
A year ago I suggested that Alex Smith should be extended because the price would never be lower. Obviously 99% of the forum was against me, but the deal I suggested would be a bargain today. Now paid writers are literally suggesting to let Alex play it out when there is no chance that the Chiefs could match free agent offers for him. Their defense is that he could get hurt. Wow, and if he gets hurt, who plays QB? Chiefs are screwed either way Best case scenario if we don't extend Alex soon is the franchise tag and that means massively overpaying for another key position |

It's not that easy. If it was, it would already be done...they have been talking for months.

I'd be just fine with a deal like that...too bad he will get a lot more than that.

I think they will wait until after the draft and it suits both parties to some degree. (Maybe one more than the other, but both nonetheless.) Chiefs can see if a QB drops to them, Smith can see what they're thinking. If he signed a modest deal, it would be easier to draft a a QB. Just wait if I were him. He doesn't want to need a trade.
I feel that Smith wants security and long-term commitment here. That’s not really going to come with an NFL contract, no matter the total amount, unless it’s a lot of money guaranteed. I don’t think he warrants a lot of money nor do I think he is demanding it. I think he wants some assurance that he’ll remain starter if he plays well. When he was the first rated quarterback in the league on a top winning team, he was replaced in SF. His contract and professionalism (subbing out without controversy) helped that happen. I believe that he can accept being replaced if he plays poorly. He can compete if winning the competition and playing well in the season keeps his job. He did both into 2012 and lost his job. I don’t think that he can accept playing well and being replaced. So I think that he’s waiting to know whether there is the pick they’re grooming. Not saying that this is the only or the biggest reason, but I think it is a big enough reason. No reason to rush into a contract they can get rid of him quickly. He needs this year to prove that he warrants a contract that isn’t as easily cuttable. |

Dude will get over $100,000,000. You folks thinking $60m with $30m guaranteed have lost your minds.
QB's get paid. A 29 yr old QB ain't signing a 3/4 year deal.. |
