i felt the same way about lots of dead songs....

though if i got a mississippi half step -> franklin's tower to open, they could play a whole show full of easy answers, samba in the rain, and my brother esau and i'd still be on cloud nine

Those filler songs always wounded me. Same for Phish: bouncin, twist et al. Oh well, you gotta take a leak sometime while you're at a show.

You know what I would love....I would love a CD copy of the July 4th show, at Sandstone in 1990, I believe it was. That show has one of my favorite versions of Fire on the Mountain. It was an unbelievable show- scorching hot too- something like 105 degrees all day....but, still one of my favorite shows.

it's an audience taped copy, there is a soundboard also here, but it seems to be lost..

you can either download the .shn's and burn them to cd or you can just stream the show and listen through your broadband connection..

there are over 2500 dead shows for download on this site.

i understand his point though, if you've listened to or seen a ton of shows, you're in the minority if you jumped up and down when you saw u.s. blues...i dig the tune, but i can think of a bunch of other songs by the dead that i'd rather see instead

sorry, i tend to be a little jaded when it comes to overplayed songs...i always think that there are older songs that they should be playing...for instance, let's trade st. stephen for u.s. blues

you could count on that song every 3rd or 4th show like clockwork

Yeah. That dude's a trip.

I dunno, some of the songs just didn't excite me when I saw them live, because I knew that they weren't going to be a vehicle to see anything "new" whereas other songs, I knew would lead to some improv and exploration. That sort of predictability that jambands fall into (This is our "epic" song that we really use as a vehicle to stretch it out, the rest we play by the book) is one of the things I began to dislike about going to shows all the time.

I guess the real problem there, though, was going to too many shows so that I got to where I was "snobby" about shows and jaded if the show wasn't up to par, which is sort of silly. Although being a jamband fan really reminds me of being a Chiefs fan, and the discussions in both online communities are very similar. You have your people saying, "You guys aren't real fans! All you do is bitch about the team/band." and others saying, "You people are clueless homers/newbies that would eat shit if the band/team told you to."

I've seen my fair share of Dead shows, Phish shows, WSP shows, Phil Lesh & Phriends shows, Ratdog shows, SCI shows, and it goes on and on....Nevah, ever, have I ever told myself- "Oh geez, not this song again."

Guys, it's not about the songs- it's about the music, the energy, the vibes, the peeps.

You guys really need to read Deadhead Social Science. It's an interesting sociological book on the entire scene, the peeps, the songs, the music, and even Shakedown Street itself. Some kid in the class even marked how many times they played a song, when they played it, and where....it goes on and on...

Don't get me wrong, phisherman, but this has been my gist with Phish fans to begin with- they don't parlay into the communal energy of the music's adventures. It's about the music- and you don't need to be stoned out of your gore to understand the music....the music makes you spin, it makes you dance, it makes you smile- not the drugs, not your friends, and not the songs. It's all about the connection with what you're a hearing and believing. If you don't hear it, and you don't believe it- you're not going to like it. This is why when people say things like, "...the Grateful Dead suck.." they have a valid reason- 'cause if you don't "GET" the music, it does suck.

I tell you one thing, if I'm at a show and they play "U.S. Blues" and you say out loud, "Ahhh shucks, not this song again." Then you are in the wrong place....

I agree with you for the most part, and the end of my huge jamband phase ended shortly after I got jaded. That being said, you're describing your reason for loving the music and the shows. Other people have equally valid ones. For some people it is about going and getting stoned out of their gourds. For others it's about collecting experiences (I was there when they broke out Unbroken Chain for the first time!). For others it's about partaking in communal spirit. For some it's about collecting live music the way others collect baseball cards. I could go on and on. There's a ton of reasons that people go to shows, and to try to pigeonhole them all into a "right" reason to go to shows is..well...wrong.

totally valid point, but remember, that people go to shows for different reasons, and even though what you say makes sense, it doesn't change the fact that different people go to shows for different reasons...none are the only right way...

if i want to go and see a dead show, there will be things that i want to see or hear more than others, but i'm not going to drag everyone elses show down by being the guy saying, "this song sucks, play something old!"

as a hack, amateur musician my perception of the scene is just different, no more right or wrong than anyone elses...
