So what's wrong with eating horse?

A post in the lasagne thread got me thinking, why do people find eating horse so disgusting? If you look at them they're not really all that different than cows/deer/ etc...they're all big beasts that graze off the land.

I have never tried horse but I doubt it would be disgusting. I guess I just dont understand why its so taboo...is it just because they're pretty and you can ride them? What does that have to do with their meat?

If you want good horse, go to Russia, not Japan.

I've eaten horse in Italy. It's a typical form of salumi in Puglia. Dark, robust. Like a bresaola but a little more intense.

hell, if i was hungry i'd eat horse, dog, coon, beaver(4legged...already good w/2). if i was real hungry i'd eat cat, possum, bobcat. never armadillo.

i know an old woman who swallowed a horse. she's dead of course.

As one who used to have horses, I could never knowingly eat one. I know several cultures do, such as in Belgium and France, but to me, they are a different kind of animal than a pig, cow, or sheep. They're more like giant dogs if you have ever owned one in the way you look at and treat the animal. They become like a friend. My cousin Jim has beef cattle and he names them Steak 1, Steak 2, etc. so it's not so personal. His horses have names just as his dogs do, but they are never going to be on the dinner menu.

Besides, announcing we're having My Little Pony for dinner is traumatic for the youngens
