Late night bullshit: Chiefs needs, aside from QB.

I love how Pioli looked at the Chiefs performance in last year's playoff game, and he makes priority #A1 to upgrade the WR position.

Added Breaston. Drafted Baldwin. Picked Colbert off the scrap heap.

I think when the season wraps up this year, Pioli's going to look over this team and decide that it needs to have its passrush revamped to help out Hali much like he helped out Bowe.

The problem with this, of course, is that it's muuuuuch harder to rush the passer than it is to run a route and receive passes. As a result, there's really no OLB on the scene in 2012 that are working picking up through free agency. OLB will need to be a very early pick for the Chiefs.

Defensive line will need to be upgraded as well. Dorsey will be in his contract year, and Pioli has no loyalty to him because he was an Edwards pick. It's possible that Allen Bailey is that guy, but the Chiefs need to fortify the position anyway because holding onto Wallace Gilberry will be very difficult. It also isn't clear that Bailey can do much to rush the passer. Dorsey and Jackson can't either, so a DE specialized in applying pressure, maybe?

NT is more of a concern for me than it is for the Chiefs, who may be willing to resign both Gregg and Amon Gordon. But I'd like to see a stud, especially with how well Chapman played tonight for Alabama.

Depth across our secondary should be a concern. The way the league is changing, a team cannot survive without a talented and deep secondary. Resigning Carr must happen, and Berry must recover from his injury. But we need more CB and especially S help.

Offensive line is going to look pretty set, so long as we find a new right tackle: [new RT] [Asamoah] [Hudson] [Lilja] [Albert]. Depth at tackle will also be needed, and other than Darryl Harris, we have no depth along the interior.

We could use another receiving TE option, and a big back at RB, but we all know this.

Here's where I rank our needs:

1. OLB
2. RT
3. RB
4. TE
5. DE
6. S
7. OT

I'd say we're okay with Siler at the thumper and Demorrio Williams at the Will (is that what it's called) behind DJ for a year while we upgrade at more important positions.

You can draft or pick up a FA ILB, plug them in immediately, and be just fine. They are typically the last pieces you need to add, along with RB.

Gilberry has 2 QB pressures this year.

Last year he had 29.

Cuts both ways. If he's a fluke, why would we resign him?

Because he's still a good depth player.

I suppose it's possible some dumbass 4-3 GM might overpay for him, but I doubt it.

Putting on weight was a huuuge mistake. He needed to stay the same weight, or maybe even slim down more and possibly get some reps at OLB.

But honestly he's just not a good 3-4 fit.

I think a 4-3 team would probably drop more on him than we would, all things being equal, if both teams were looking for depth with upside.

He really does not fit this defense at all.

I haven't looked this up, but I believe Gilberry was a Herm Edwards acquisition? He doesn't really fit the Cover 2 either -- WTF is he a Chief?

Yeah. Our defensive line still isn't consistently good, but it's so difficult to know what to do with it. Spending more first round talent on it is not something I want to do in the least. It's got plenty of depth, but doesn't make as many plays as it needs to.

The only solution I can think of is letting Dorsey AND Jackson walk when their contracts are up (unfortunately Jackson has several years left on his deal) and then trying again.

Allen Bailey might be an answer. We knew he was raw coming into this season, and needed some experience and time to learn how to turn his country strength into face-raping power.

Also, typing that post hurt me deep. We've tried so hard to build an amazing defensive line for 10 years and have failed miserably every single time. Dorsey is good (not great) and Jackson's only just now becoming adequate.

If only we devoted as much time and energy to the QB position as we did the defensive line.

Bailey Smash is an X factor. He really looks amazing physically, and he applies pretty good push in our sub packages, but he doesn't have that passrushing explosion. But of course, that can take some time to develop; you've got to give him three years to develop.

But I say take the Pittsburgh/Baltimore approach: take front seven early and often.

You go to the Super Bowl if you have two things: a great QB and a great front seven.

Ha. We actually have the best DE combo in the league when it comes to stopping the run.

Probably among the worst for rushing the pass, though.

RB and DE are farther down the totem pole than NT and Guard/C. We have Hudson to take over for G/C so whichever he doesn't play we need. We also have a 35 year old 1 year contract NT named Gregg.

Battle may not be a long term solution but he is making his case for being given a shot to compliment Charles for at least a year.

RE: OLB

I don't know if it has anything to do with the Patriots' philosophy on OLB talent, but so far Pioli has not been able to bring in good outside linebackers and the Patriots haven't found one in forever.

In fact I'm pretty much drawing a complete ****ing blank on the last time the Patriots fielded a good pass rusher that wasn't named Dick Seymour.

Truth. The most successful one I can think of in that time is Tully Banta-Cain.

FTW!!
