Elon Musk's new 5th form of transportation. The Hyperloop.

All That We Know About Musk's Hyperloop: The Infographic

http://jalopnik.com/all-that-we-know...hic-1066973247

As we've all heard by now Elon Musk, un-contented with running an electric car company and a spaceship company, will be announcing plans for a 30-minute round trip LA to SF transit system. Luckily, someone has shared this lovely infographic with us showing everything we know so far.

And what we know so far isn't really all that much: Musk says it's not a tube with a pure vacuum in it, it could be powered entirely by solar panels and even generate electricity, and it's sort of a "cross between a Concorde and a railgun and an air hockey table," which coincidentally is exactly what my drawings for my future home's rec room included back when I was six.

The actual details should be revealed on Monday, so those of you creating scale models in your backyards shouldn't have to wait too much longer. And while Musk now says he's too busy to build it himself (come on! Just skip your Tuesday night hot yoga class, man) I'm still hoping this thing actually will get built, so I can finally get looked down upon by San Franciscans in 30 minutes instead of the usual 5 hours by car.

Info graphic is huge but worth expanding and checking out.

This thing is going to be awesome...

Let's do it

It would make KC and STL effectively one area.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Your chance to catch a glimpse at the future of mass transportation is now here.

A piece of the first ever Hyperloop pod, called XP-1, is here in Kansas City on a cross-country tour.

"You're going to get the chance to see the future," KC Tech Council President Ryan Weber said.

It just pulled into the Kansas Speedway during the American Royal's World Series of Barbecue and will be on display Saturday. The historic vehicle will be on display starting at 11 a.m. Get your tickets here.
Weber understands seeing is sometimes believing, especially when it looks like something out of a sci-fi movie.

"Hopefully, by seeing this technology in real life more and more, believers are going to come online that this is going to happen -- and it is," Weber said. "It is going to happen, and it's going to happen in Kansas City."

Virigin Hyperloop One Ceo Jay Walder said KC is a front-runner for the futuristic mode of transportation linking Kansas City to St. Louis in just 30 minutes.

"At full scale, this can really move people and goods across this country much more quickly and much more predictively," Weber said.

The Hyperloop pod has an electric engine that's propelled by magnets, which levitates the cabinet. Walder said you'll be able to glide holding a cup of coffee at 600 mph.

"Also, I think we get excited about next-day delivery of goods. Imagine next-hour delivery," Weber said. "And this is where our minds need to start thinking about the future when systems like this start coming online that's the world that we'll be living in."

Although the Missouri Hyperloop isn't off the ground just yet, the $7-$10 billion project could be in operation in 7-10 years.

"It will really change the way that we travel across this country," Weber said.

City size is often determined by how fast technology allows an inhabitant to move through it. If you can get anywhere in the city in less than hour, the city still has potential to grow in size. Once it takes more than an hour to go from somewhere in the city to some where else in the city, city growth often stagnates.

Musk is working on technologies that will increase city sizes if the technologies pan out. I am doubtful of that though.

Not sure what you mean since there are dozens of organizations still working on it. I'm still skeptical it'll ever be truly viable, but that doesn't mean people should stop working on it.

I think it's definitely viable for shorter distances, (KC to St Louis for example).

New idea. Simpletons immediately dismiss it.

Hyperloop could revolutionize our lives an even larger degree compared to air travel. Technology has caught up to the idea

2013 is not new. So let me get this right.

You want to build a vaccum tube protected by 2CM of steel and prop it up on supports?

Then you wanna stick a travelling vessel inside it and sling it 800 mph? In a vacuum?

Then you want to trust that the top of the loop wont get hotter than the bottom of the loop causing warp or expansion shredding you to death.

Then you want to trust the vessel your travelling in doesn't get a leak and kill you as if your in outer space?

That's not including an actual break in that tube will kill you with a wall of air travelling at the speed of sound.

I could go on if you'd like. lol

So let me get this straight...

You want to lift a flying tube 30,000 feet in the air?

You want that tube to fly 300+ mph?

You want to trust that you don't die from the lack of oxygen

You want to believe that the plane will stay pressurized enough make it to your destination?

I could go on if you'd like...

That was just the start. We could go into pricing and efficiency next. The point is it's just not viable or cost effective right now.

R&D the crap out of it all you want. It's just not an efficient or viable form of transportation in our current age.
